I have a 1993 F250 extended cab 4x4 with a 460, E4od and 4:10 running gear. I just purchased it a month or so ago with 163K on it. The trans shifts a little wierd sometimes but nothing to alarming. Today I was driving and it was running very well. Turned it off and when I restarted it it was running very rough. It would shift into reverse fine but in drive it would slip very bad like it was caught in between neutraland drive. Putting it in 1st seemed alittle better but still would not do anything. I shut it off and disconnected the battery for about 2 minutes. I then stareted it and checked the fluid which was fine. Tried to drive, and the same thing. I then shut it down again started it back up and it was running like normal. I put it in gear and everything was fine. I then drove about 2 miles home with no issues at all. I am very stumped. I do not know if anyone has had this issue. If so please let me know. I do not know what my next step should be. This is my only vehical to drive. Thanks
I just tried it again and same thing. The passenger side of the motor seems really loud. The exhaust smells like it is running real rich. When it is running like this the trans does not work. Sorry for my ignorance but where are the "grounds" that I should be looking for at. The battery terminals are fine and the ground cable is attached to the body fine. Thanks
The negative lead of the battery leads down to a spot on the passenger side of the frame then continues onto the block. If that ground to the block is compromised the Signal Return to the PCM can be in a "floating" condition. The ground to the frame is not used if you are not pulling a trailer.
The 7.5L engine is notorious for cracked exhaust manifolds. Any exhaust leak will make the PCM think there is a lean condition therefore it dumps in more fuel. Start with the ground issue, then check for a cracked exhaust manifold.
That or your EEC(computer) is dying, as both the tranny and engine are controlled by it, a dying EEC should cause these kind of troubles (just my guess at it, could be a number of things).
The wiring could also have a short, causing these kind of issues, i would advice you to pull codes before anything.
I am going to check the ground in the morning. I will also pull the codes and see what that tells me. I defidently have exhaust leaks around the manifolds but what makes me confused is this just happened out of the blue, although I only put about 250 miles on the truck since I bought it. Now the prevous owner did put a different exhaust syslem on it and bypassed the air pump. The pump itself is hooked up but it is not plumbed into the exhaust or the converter anymore. The hoses just pump out into the air. Ther is a O2 sensor welded in to the system. When the truck idles it makes a vauge horn/vibrating sound from the air pump hoses. This is when the truck is running good. As for the computer I have one I purchased with a Jet Super chip that I will put in the truck. I do not know exactly what truck it came out of because the sticker is off of it but, it supposodly came out of a 1995 f250 with a 460 and an auto trans. Thank you for the replies so far, any more would be very much appreciated. Thanks
Do not put that PCM w/chip in your truck, you will regret it. The only thing it does is jack up the timing and require the use of premium fuel. Take it off and sell to some poor soul on E-bay.
I just pulled the codes. All I am getting is 33. I believe anyway, I get three blinks pause three blinks longer pause one blink pause three blinks pause three blinks and then nothing. I looked this up and it says that a code 33 means my EGR isnt opening fully. Would this cause the very rich condition. What I do not understand is why this would affect the trans mission. Any ideas on how to go about fixing this. Thanks
After I pulled the codes I started it up and it ran fine. I am going to drive around and get it up to temp. amd see if it happens when the truck is warmed up.

I think what you might be seeing is 111 111 1 111 which means all is good. If | = a beep and a . = a one second pause then does it look like this |.|.|..|.|.|..| a code 33 would be |||.||| and then it should repeat. It can be kinda hard to tell sometimes....
This is all confussing to me. I took off the EGR sensor, made sure it was free and reinstalled. Went thru and checked all connectors that I could see. Wiggled wires around to look for bare/shorted wires and found nothing. Drove the truck about 50 miles(a little more aggressive than normal) turned it off and on multipal time, and everything seem normal. This is very irritating to chase a gremlin that I cannot visualy see is broken. I guess I will drive it until it happens again and just keep an eye on things until then. If anyone can think of anything else to check I would appreciate it. Thanks
There should be no confusion. The first set of tests are Key On-Engine Off (KOEO), if no problem is found the PCM will output the all clear signal of 111, 111. The next set of codes, if there are any, is Continuous Memory. If there are any codes present they will be displayed twice. From there you can run the Key On-Engine On tests. Again, if there is a problem the PCM will output the codes twice.
The confusion is the PCM is saying that everything is ok, but something is still wrong. Well everything went well for two days them it did it again. I ended up putting a different computer computer in it today from a 1995. I will keep the findings posted. Thanks
