My daily driver is currently a 98 Mark VIII which i absolutley detest. But it is probably the best motor and tranny i have ever had in a stock car, and i bet itll be even better when it isnt stock.
Came across some threads awhile back on 67-73 f100's running crown vic suspensions, and was wondering if the mid 70-79 could be set up the same for as easy?
are there any write ups on such a thing bouncing around here?
Okay, well i searched and found a few ppl mentioning that they were running them, but no write ups yet.
I have one other question, ive noticed some ppl run the panther front end with the 4.6, and others use a different motor. When using the 4.6 does it bolt directly to the aluminum cross member from the crown vic whereas the other motors people are making custom mounts that sit higher (similiar to the factory truck mounts) or am i thinking about this wrong.
(I ask b.c if i sell the Lincoln i wouldn't be against running a 351w or 460 just because i am more familiar to them and it is cheaper to build and tune)
So are you trying to swap the suspension or the motor? Or both?
IMO an NA 4.6 is gutless and not worth the trouble unless you get a 4v motor out of a mach 1 or NA cobra. The ultimate 4.6 swap would be a supercharged 4.6 out of an 03-04 cobra, but that may not be feasible.
yeah, but greasy messy and cheap sounds better then big bucks a beautiful right now. thanks for the reply and if the frame looks that good id love to the a pic of the finished product.
I'll take a shot at answering.
1st 73 to 79 truck frames are the same as 67 to 72 truck frames from the rear cab mount forward. So yes a Crown Vic goes on the same way.
2nd Yes a 4.6 just bolts to the Crown Vic aluminum cross member.
3rd The Crown Vic cross member makes lots of room and You can lower Your engine a lot or if You feel You need the engine up as high as it was ( I wouldn't) You can.

I agree. That would be the best way to go is the 4v if your doin the swap. They should be pretty common in the junkyard, but if you were to find the supercharged 4.6, it shouldnt have any clearance problems(hell, they fit it in the mustang), but if there were they shouldnt be any major hiccups in it. Thinkin about it, the Mach1 had an all aluminum block in it, but I think its a 3v. But that wouldnt be a bad compromise, it would be a lot lighter. Just my $.02.

Not as spendy as you might think. $1,500.00 bucks including rack & pinion, calipers, rotors, everything. By the time you buy the used clip, replace any rotors, calipers, pads, ball joints, tie rod ends, rack, a-arm bushings etc.etc. you will probably have as much money in it and 3 times the labor. I've done the camaro and volaire clips in the past and they ALWAYS costed a lot more than you bargain for since it's used stuff and your making things fit.
I'm not saying this panther front end is a bad way to go, I hope it works out great for you.
Have fun with your project!

The mach 1's are 4v's. 3v's started in the 05+ mustangs.
Ideally you could get an aluminium "teksid" block out of a lincoln, or certain build numbers of the cobras and mach's had them. It is THE strongest 4.6 block ever used by ford, capable of 1000+ hp.
This thread shows how to identify that particular block. It has the square-marks on the intake valley, which you can barely see if the motor is in the car, just peak around with a flashlight.

The 'best' price I could see in their catalog was just over 2 grand.
They don't list anything newer than 1964 Ford trucks.
Nice looking stuff though.
