My truck came with the large round power steering pump with the reservoir "pressed" onto the pump. However, the stock one was leaking between the reservoir and the pump, so I bought a new one... that came with a plastic reservoir. Surprise! This brand new one leaks in the exact same spot - do have I have better options?
Nobody else has this issue or has found a better design of pump to swap in? I have a lot of money in the rebuilt engine and transmission that got rid of 999 of my 1,000 previous leaks, this last one is proving difficult...
Your old one just wore out and the seal gave way which happens. The new one may have been assembled wrong when it was rebuilt,in which case, thats where you use your warranty. You may be able to mount a newer pump that uses a remote fill that is seperate from the pump. I'm not sure but somebody will come along with a better idea. Good luck.
What he said, just swap out the pump, you just got coincidental leak in my opinion. Put these things together 24/7 and almost never have a leak. We sell a lot of pumps but not reservoirs. We swap them all the time.
I just put a new PS pump on my 77 F-150. It has a metal reservoir but it's not pressed in. It has a large nut on back of the pump where the high pressure line bolts on that holds it together.
I paid under $40 for a rebuilt one at O'Reilly. I just put it on last week, no compaints so far. My pump has a metal reservior as well.
The best pump is the Saginaw 20-6244. The pumps with the plastic reservoirs sometimes whine a lot and leak. Bought mine from Advanced Auto. about 50 bucks.
I agree with Bart I am still looking for a 460 van for the brackets for the GM tear drop pump. Only vans I have found in the yard with a 460 the brackets are long gone.
I wish I would have researched the saginaw pump before installing a stock replacement last week! Oh well, I the stocker works fine for me. I'm not in tough off road conditions much.
