Latest Blackstone Report

So I sent off my sample last month, then went on vacation & forgot all about it. I just got back and realized I never saw the report. Had to dig it out of my Spam Folder...

Anyway, as you all can see, my wear metals are still up, especially the iron. Anyone have any clue as to why this is happening? I do idle it for hours at a time occasionally during some of the testing I do in the field. This one is after the injector swap, the last one was done before. So it can't be the extra HP I'm getting (iron is about the same taking into account the reduced miles on this sample). No heavy towing, but as most of you know, I do run it pretty hard occasionally when I have to show a Cumma-Max or two the tail lights....

I'm open to any & all suggestions. I'm scratching my head on this one...

The iron is high on this sample compared to the last sample. You went a little more then half the miles on this sample then the last one, but the iron is not that far off from the last.
Are you not collecting parts for a rebuild?

Does it have anything to do with the 449/1016 mod in your sig?

Probably not. It was high when the numbers were 310/681.

Should be interesting what the oil gurus say there Joe, all your additives look good from my observations but then again, I'm not Rich WhiteBuffalo, he knows his stuff..Haven't seen him in a while but I'm sure he'll be by..

It'll be interesting next time. This oil is that "new" Rotella T6. I'll be curious what the additives look like then. Of course, it's *supposed* to be the same oil in a new package with a new name. I guess we'll see.

I may drop the $$$ next time for some Schaeffer and see what happens...

I haven't tried the new Rotella T6 yet, I'm running some Mobil 1 1300 Delvac 15-40 now. If you can get it, defintly as per Rich recommended for me, run the Schaeffers 15-40 synthetic blend. Good stuff.

My next oil change will be in the spring, so I'll give the 7000 a shot. I prefer 5W-40 for winter, and there's no way I'll get 5k on this oil before winter is over anyway.

Its good. I had 7000 in mine this past winter and a slight little romp or two on occasion but it smoothed out after that but we also had record cold and snow this past year, you'll be good. Back to your high iron numbers, don't want to sidetrack your thread brother..

It's not really a sidetrack -- I'd like to simply try something different oil-wise just to see what happens. If it reduces my iron issue, then I'm good. I don't expect it, but I sure would like to know why it's happening!!

I wonder if the 5w40 is to thin and is allowing slight contact under heavy low RPM strain. We run 15w40 in all of our fleet diesels summer or winter.

I'm not sure if 5W-40 would cause that. I ALWAYS let it warm up before getting into the throttle, and after it's warm, it acts the same at 15W-40. That said, I will try some Schaeffer 7000 15W-40 Syn Blend next time...
