I'm rather new here, lurk a lot, but don't post much. Really cool site. Trying to find out, who does the absolute best job on re-building a transmission in the Texas area. Have a 99' F250, 7.3. 4x4, automatic. The trans is starting to slip a little. Got 145K miles. Been told that Brain Thompson is the best for Tran's, but he's in Ark. Theirs so many, less-than-honest people in the Tran's business, that's why I'm looking for input from you guy's. Theirs got to be someone in TX that knows these type of Tran's really well. Who?
I thought about just buying a new truck, but decided to rebuild everything. The truck looks almost new, but everything under it is wearing out. I plan on having the whole underside overhauled, if needed. The 7.3 runs like a top and never had a problem. Appreciate any and all information. Many Thanks
I understand the concern about a reliable trans service place. I just need a standard service on a 2000 F250 7.3 with auto trans. Tranny shop said that I could just do a flush and screen replacement. I have always been told not to do this as draining hot trans fluid and replacing it with cold fluid can warp clutch plates. He said that is an old wives tail.
Would sure appreciate any feedback...
I used a guy in Liberty Hill Tx - he did a good enough job - but that is way out of your way. But, I have a good friend who is a mechanic - not nec. cheap but good. I asked him & he always just drops in a New (reman?) Ford trans & he claims the Ford has something like 100K warranty. Now it isn't cheap - but I spent about 2k rebuilding mine & he thought it was about 3K for Ford...
I don't know if that helps - but might consider the option if your gonna keep the truck for a few more years.

Where are you at? You might talk to your local mechanic if you got one that you trust /or call the stealership just to check prices... If not I know a guy in Austin -
Is there any difference in Mercon trans fluids as far as quality? You see everything from basic Walmart brand to higher end Castrol products...
Any recommendations?
