Torque increase on 77' 400

How do I increase torque on my stock 77' 400? I'm new to this but I'm all ears. Any rookie things to do?

You have to specify what RPM range you want the torque increase to occur in. Down low, middling, higher up... Torque increases most easily with more cubic inches... However, since '77 engines were only about 7's to 1 compression ratio, a good torque increase can also be achieved by using TMI pistons to bring that up to 9's compression ratio... plus a bit bigger than stock cam for a HP increase... it's much more expensive, but can also increase both cubic inches and compression ratio...

Welcome to FTE!

The way you increase torque is either displacement, or by increasing cylinder filling, which increases cylinder pressure.

Externally, you can try to increase air flow into the engine. Less restrictive air intake and bigger carb would be a start. A different intake manifold and even bigger carb would work. Increasing the flow out will help with the effort, dual exhaust and headers for example.

Your timing set may have the camshaft timing retarded 4 degrees. This reduces cylinder pressure at low revs, reducing power. If you advance it, it costs top end power.

These are fairly cheap and easy with modest gains. Once you start swapping stuff like manifolds, you are no longer "stock".

Beyond that, a cam that has higher lift for quick cylinder filling and timing aimed and retaining that pressure.

Then you get into a full rebuild with all of the above and pistons that raise the compression ratio, and then heads that flow better.

So it depends on your budget.

6=8 bud. My '86 is only 90 ish hp mind you.
In fact throughout the V-8 run (right from the flatheads on up) there had always been an inline 6 available that would outperform & most definitely outlast any of the V-8 engines. Imagine a 1998 with a factory 300 I-6 🤣
They kept them in Australia until 2018 and at the end they were Turbocharged!!!! 🥰
it's been said that after the nuclear Holocaust there will be cockroaches still alive and 300 For3-6's

V8 vs Inline 6

Yeah, Chevy OHV 6 usually had more HP than same year Ford flathead V8... by 1953 Ford 80 HP to Chevy up to 150 HP...
