Got some time to test the new full hydro steering setup from the ranger this past weekend. Even had Kris (Alpha), Paul (CaptainP4) and their wimmins out to play in the mud with me and Nick (Broncobeater) Here's the during install of the ram I picked up a while back from Fishy:
After testing:
And a tweaked fitting after a pretty rough run:
My 1st pass during X class where I took 3rd place on motor running against guys with NOS:
That made my azz pucker a bit when it almost went over twice! And lastly Pauls run on the 39.5 cheeto boggers. We found after his run why it was running a little crappy. #1 plud was an old dead plug that wasn't firing, so this is a 7 cylinder run. Oh pay close attention to the end as this is why Kris' lady isn't allowed to video too often :
Just a guess.. (From left to right.)
Karl, Nick, Paul and Kris.
I guessed with Nick and Kris, but from what i've heard. Karl says he's fat. And i've seen some goofy picture of Paul he posted.
I think Paul f'ed up the 400. Karl dropped in the new motor IIRC..
That's the right order. Yeah Paul blew up the 400 so I built him a stock 460 for the bronco. He had some issues with a procrap hei dizzy and some severe header gasket leaks to where it kept overheating and eventually wiped a lobe on the cam. So, now he has my old d3 heads and boat cam in it. It is exactly what I had in my ranger last year and should give him plenty of low end torque to play with.
My second run was a wild one! Went in the air 3 times and almost rolled it twice. I had never been to that track, so I had no clue how to set the truck up for it. I know now!
I was curious what Paul had done to his 460. I have a pretty much stock 77 truck 460 in my 79 Bronco, even with 4.88s and 37s I am still not completely satisfied with the power it has. The C6 is getting pretty whipped, and I am sure that doesn't help things. I just put this truck together a couple months ago, She runs pretty strong but I still have a few bugs to work out of it. I would like to take my Bronco to a couple mud runs in my area, maybe next year I want to make sure I got all my chit in good working order. Kjett... that second run was flippin sweet, I bet people watching were going nuts!
What heads do you have on it? Paul's is a bone stock bottom end with ported D3 heads and upgraded springs to handle the xm270h comp cam, roller rockers, stealth intake and 850dp carb. He'd make much more power when he saves the money to change out to flat top pistons over the stock dished one. Problem is when you raise compression, it makes more power but you need to spend more on higher octane fuel. With his setup, we were looking more toward low end grunt for trails/rocks over high rpm mud runs.
Figure what your goals are and Rob, Kris, and I can tell you what all you need to do to get you there.
IIRC I have the D3VE heads, all stock internals. I am running an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake with a 650 Edelbrock carb, stock manifolds, 2.5" exhaust with Flowmaster 40s. I know the 650 carb and stock exhaust manifolds have it pretty corked up, more carb and headers would definately help I am sure. I bought the intake and carb used very cheap from a couple buddies, I am on a bit of a budget so I can't go too crazy with it just yet. It's no rip snortin badass big block but it gets around pretty good. It was enough to embarrass a Chevy TBI 454 my last trip to the dunes with it. I know that's not saying much because those motors were gutless boat anchors.
I do have another 460 sitting I bought a while back, it's a 1970 block with DOVE heads. I am thinking that will actually be the motor that goes in the Bronco when all is said and done. According to various sources that motor produced 365 hp and 500 tq from the factory. Anything I do should make it an animal. I am aware of the needs of a higher compression motor, which is why I want to stay at or below 10.5 to 1.
I want to use this truck for trail riding, dunes, and some mud running. I am not looking for any specific hp/tq numbers, any direction I go with a 460 it should perform very well for my needs. Most of my 4 wheeling has been with a mildly warmed up 300 six and a granny 4 speed. I had no complaints... I could go the same places and more as anyone else in a truck the same size.
What size bore does the ram have ? I run a 1 1/2". I don't know about full hydro, but anything over 1 3/4" will be slow reacting with hydro assist.
It's a 2" bore x 8" stroke ram. It steers a little faster and much easier than it did with the manual mustang rack. With the steering valve and 3/8" lines it goes lock to lock in a little over 2 turns. And since I never go full lock to lock in the pit it works good for my needs.
