Got my truck back today. $325... Let's consider this a "lesson learned".

But at least they didn't drain my fuel tank, I had just filled it.

It actually stops better now than it did before. Maybe the thin wall of the rusty tube wasn't as rigid? Anyway I have a much firmer pedal.

The rusted line was probably expanding, which would reduce pressure to the calipers, and thus reduce the force of the pads against the rotors.

Know the feeling - Back in '78 I was driving a '74 Ford & coming off of Rabbit Ears Pass in Colorado hit the brakes & they went to the floor - THEN the idiot light came on! Like I didn't know the brakes were out! luckily it was left rear & was able to pinch the steel line with a pair of vice-grips good enough to maintain enough pressure to get me to steamboat springs & get new line...

Not a great feeling - no matter how fast you are going........

You are one lucky man. It could have been much worse. The better braking could also be from newly flushed system and new fluid.

It is likely that your brake lines are stainless, but any grade of stainless below 400 will rust/corrode.

I flushed the heck out of the system and it helped but it is much better now.

In fact the first time i flushed it i thought i had bought the wrong fluid because the fluid i bought was clear but the fluid i was bleeding out into a clear water bottle was hunter green and cloudy.

I've never seen a factory stainless steel brake line - and obviously Ford didn't put much effort into corrosion protection on those lines. Galvanizing them would be a good start.

All the brake lines hanging on the rack at Pep Boys are mild steel. I doubt a flaring tool could even begin to flare stainless steel, either. Bending the lines would be a real treat, too - if they were stainless.

Watch this for an overview. The rust is destroyed by heat and chemical reaction:

My Dad replaced the brake lines on his '85 F250 with all stainless kit from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard. Something wasn't right about one of the fittings and we had to cut the SS line, re-use the original fitting, and re-flare the line. That was definitely a PITA but we did manage to do it. I don't think my KD flare tool would hold up to too many of those though.

when working with SS lines, I've always substituted a hydraulic press for the threaded tool when flaring...

bending is just awkward.

If you bought the truck in mass they use liquid salt on most road surfaces here.(i work in mass)aswell as regular rock salt
Its eats anything thats metal very quickly, except aluminzed galvanized which is what the newer fuel line is made of.

Thats why most cars here are rot boxes.

newbie here, and i'm finding out that, long story short, the motor isn't the first thing i'm gonna tackle....the brake system is! Mr. Brutus and I took our first downhill joy-ride into my backyard through my 4x6 posts trellis and the kids swingset as i got him off the trailer from purchasing
