I just purchased an 01 F250 7.3l regular cab. After doing a quick observation of the engine compartment I found that the intercooler boots on both the driver and passenger side are coated with oil/grease/grime. The passenger side has oil/grime all the way down to the tiebars or sway bars. No other trace of oil or oil leaks anywhere else on the motor. Not fresh oil but that dry coated old caked up grime.
Does this indicate a possible boost/leak?
The boots coming off the spider are clean.
This 2001 F250 doesn't quite have the acceleration power that my 02 7.3 excursion does. So i'm trying to find the power loss. The F250 does have 292k miles on it but I would think it should still have comparable power.
I am going to check the up-pipes on her to make sure there aren't any leaks there as well.
I don't plan on doing the ccv mod to it but my thoughts are, if oil is seeping past these boots, I assume boost pressure is too?
Also, on the intercooler boots, there are 2 hose clamps, but on the center of the boots there is this dual ring clamp kind of outside the hump of the boots. Should those be there?
There's a good chance that those oily boots are leaking boost as well. Get a hold of a set of Clay's boots from riffraff. Do the CCV mod as mentioned on the previous post and you'll be set for a long time.
Also pick up a set of his plenum reinforcement inserts and t-bolt clamps while you have everything tore down so you can clamp the plenums down tight and not have to worry about crushing the factory stamped plenums.
You just can't get the factory worm gears clamps tight enough to keep them from leaking whey you start pushing higher boost pressures.

x3 on the CCV mod...i did my old truck @ 300k when i painted my IC pipes, the insides were coated with wet oil residue...after the CCV mod, and @ 20k of some hard driving, there was nary a hint of any residue...IMHO, the CCV on the 7.3 was poorly engineered and should have been routed out the azz from the get go...never noticed a single drop of oil, did see little puffs of smoke coming out of the hose though...
