im building a 76 f100 3/4 ton it has a 390 in it that ive gotta take out and give back to the guy that gave me the truck. i want to put a 390 back in the truck and there is some kind of fe motor in a 74 f100 at my locall junkyard that i plan on rebuilding if it is a 390, but im not sure if its a 352,360 or 390. did a 74 f100 only come out with a 390 fe motor or is it possible that it is a different fe motor. any help is appreciated.
first thing is a 3/4 is a f-250 .second is it 4x4 ? because they only came with 360 fe . third i love any fe motor there torque monsters. four the only way to tell if it is a 390 or 360 is to measure the stroke an bore
Chances are its a 360, if its the original motor check the VIN fourth character "Y" its a 360, "H" is a 390.
The only way to tell for sure is to measure the bore and stroke (360: 4.05" Bore X 3.50" stroke, 390: 4.05" bore X 3.784" stroke). That is the only difference between the two.
Externally there is no way to tell. There are no engine or casting numbers that will tell you what size FE you're dealing with.
if you are rebuilding it put a stroker kit in it. and look into aftermarket heads. i spent about 800.00 rebuilding my original heads. for like 1400.00 i could have put edelbrocks on it. if i had to rebuild mine, i'd stroke it. you can make a 410 using a 428 crank and have massive torque. or you can go custom stroke and get even bigger. more bang for the same amout of money...plus all new parts instead of used...
