I just recently purchased my 1978 Ford f250, and after bringing it home and really digging into the wiring, I've realized that the previous owners were far from being master electricians. I've been going through the wiring, and have a few questions. I have searched and haven't turned out much. Under the dash I've found two three pronged connectors. One has three female connecotrs, and I know that is for powering accesories, but the other has one male connector (red/black) and two female connectors (Blue/black) I've traced one blue one up to the battery, and the other two run to the back. What I'm wondering is what is supposed to plug into this connector? I'm also curious as to what the three two pronged connectors under the rear bumper are for. If you could help me, I'd greatly appreciate it!
Are these factory or something installed by the PO's?
A FACTORY (NOT Chilton or Haynes, etc.) wiring diagram would be an excellent investment. The wiring diagrams are separate and not included in the factory service or parts manuals.
These (Ford factory parts & service manuals) would also be an excellent investment. They're available on CD from www.hipoparts.com or I see them on ebay too.
I feel they are worth their weight in gold, I refer to them constantly.
P.S. Just so you know, one of the WORST things that could ever happen to your truck is the previous owner(s).
Look at this illustration from the Ford master parts catalog. If this is the wiring you're asking about, its the factory trailer towing harness.
Scroll down and look at the left illustration basic # 15436.
