Hello, first time poster here and I could use some help. I just remotored a 65 FE powered F100 (390 now). I reused the original COM after putting in some new gaskets, filter, and replacing a brocken bolt inside the case. It was apart some so that I could get to that bolt, but I didn't tear into it very far since I'm not a COM guy and didn't feel like opening another can of worms. The transmission drove the truck to the shop--the only time I drove it after buying it, but now that it is back behind the new engine it is acting strangely. It cycled through all the gears fine as I backed it up and rolled it forward in the shop, but then it began to have a mind of its own. Park and neutral seem to work consistently, but everything else became drive after the tranny ran for a couple minutes. It took a while to listen to my inputs for reverse (kept wanting to role forward) and had me wondering if I'd have to push it back to keep it off the front wall of the shop. The whole thing spooked me a bit and I haven't actually road tested it. I'll be back out there tonight and would love some help on where to get started.
The tranny leaked like a sieve when I bought it, so it was always getting fresh fluid from the previous owner--I didn't expect a debris problem from new fluid. The shift linkage is nice and tight and seems to physically run through all the detents with nice positive engagements both in the cab and on the trans. It has been replumbed to a new radiator/tranny cooler. I don't have a manual for the truck, but the transmission has at least 8 quarts in it (I've heard that they use ten, but it read full while idling after running a while so I didn't want to keep adding).
Any help would be great--I just don't know where to start first or how serious this might be.
In case anyone was wondering, it turns out that the shift linkage was adjusted up so far that the sleeve was getting pulled past park and disengaging from the linkage. Probably because the shift collar was busted up pretty bad when I bought it and once I replaced it the adjustment was overcompensating. I'm amazed it worked at all like that. Only had to take the pan off twice to figure it out. Seems to be working now, but I haven't driven it far--I have a header leak to nip in the bud before any serious road time. Oddly enough, she shifts well now, but my park pall isn't engaging. Maybe I took the linkage adjustment too far the other way? We'll see.

Yes, a 1965 truck shop manual, available on e-bay, Amazon, as originals, re-prints, and on CD or thumb drive.
