I have an '07 F150 5.4 2WD. Normally when I start it, it starts right up.
Twice I've turned the key like normal and released it expecting it to start but it didn't. I turn the key again and it has to crank for maybe 5 seconds before it finally starts.
Once running, everything is fine. There are no trouble codes, no check engine light. It has 39,000 miles on it.
I took it to the dealer and they couldn't find any problems. They said they cleaned the MAF sensor and reprogramed the computer and told me if it does it again to bring it back.
Any ideas out there?
have you had the new battery tested? I purchased an optima and two months later it went bad as it lost a cell. Might wanna get the battery load tested just in case.

Does it happen on the first start of the day or later on? I have the same engine and also 2WD although mine is an '05. This happens to me occasionally but only when the engine AND air temperature are both hot. Like running quick errands on a hot day and the engine is only off for 20 minutes or less. It sometimes does exactly as you describe. I always cuss once and chalk it up to fuel atomization issues or fuel line pressure but it always starts eventually. Also no codes. I grew up before fuel injection and was used to occasional vapor lock issues so I just ignore this even though I know it's completely different. I know this is not a solution but wondered if there is a certain set of circumstances when yours acts up.

I'm pre-fuel injection also so I know what you're talking about regarding vapor lock.
Both times it happened at night. The first time, I left the house and stopped to fill up. The station is about 2 miles from the house, it was shut down for maybe five minutes. The oat was mid/high 80's.
The second time left the house to run an errand, stopped at a convenience store about seven miles away, again I was inside about five minutes. This time the oat was more like low 90's.
Both times, once it started it ran perfectly normal.
I'm just a little paranoid because I travel extensively for work (35,000+ annually) many times, out in the middle of nowhere. I've been in area's where the closest garage was 80 miles away (forget Ford dealer).
If I knew it was just an annoyance and would start it wouldn't bother me. But the problem is I DON'T know that.
I have an 07 4wd and mine does it maybe once a month. It will crank for a while and not start. Just like you guys say there are no trouble codes or check engine lights. I have an extended warranty but to ask a dealer to find something wrong its like asking them to find the lost city of Atlantis. If either of you guys get an answer for this issue I would love to know.
This sounds like a known problem with the 4.6L engines in Mustang GT's. It would always happen after the car has been run, then shut down, then restarted a few minutes later. Like when you stop for gas or go to a store for a six pack. When you restart the car after its only been off for a few minutes it cranks for awhile before starting. In those engines it had something to do with the IAC valve. The solution was to turn the key to ON for a couple of seconds and then to START.

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into the 4.6L problem, if its not the same it sounds very similar.
