I just bought a 96 F-350 4x4 utility body with the 460 E4OD and was looking for any input on mileage or performance mods. It is a work truck and I'm looking for what works on these engines intakes or exhaust etc..or if it is really worth it. I've always had diesels so this is a new area for me. Any info would be great.
Thanks Marc
With the EFI specific heads and (most likely) speed density setup we don't have all that much we can do. With the OD trans you should be able to coax 12-13mpg highway out of it. I have a C6 and get 9.5 mixed.
The exhaust side is where most people say gains can be made on these. Depending on the local inspection standards either get a high-flow cat or eliminate it all together, then run a cat back with a low restriction muffler.
My step is the stock manifolds into the stock pipes (2x 2.5) that run down to where the cat was, then I have a dual 2.5" into a single 3" collector, and a Summit 3" single cat back. I'm not sure on the power gains here as it was such a basket case that much more had to be fixed before I could get any real sense of what she's got. Some people swear by the Gibson power pack, and Pacesetter mufflers are spoken very highly of. I went with Summit for the price, and their brand stuff has always been high quality IMO. My truck sounds good and doesn't drone, so I'm happy.
Thanks man I just started searching the forum and am too finding the exhaust seems to be the first mod everyone is leaning towards. As far as the emissions inspection I'm exempt here because of the GVW anyway does the cat removal through the check engine light or lean out the fuel at all?
Unless your truck is MAF it shouldn't. The final O2 sensor should be in front of the cat, so as far as the computer is concerned nothing changed. Even if it is MAF and has sensors ensuring the cat is present there are eliminators available to keep the CEL off...the ones i have on my Mustang are from Steeda, but they do not sell them anymore.
Even if it is MAF that may not be a problem. How many O2 sensors does it have? If it has only one infront of the cats then it will be fine. Since its an F250 I bet its still OBDI not OBDII like the 96 F150.
