My carb on my 390 is leaking vacuum bad at the throttle shaft. a replacement is 230.00. cant see paying that for stock, 70s tech. whats a good aftermarket replacement? its a stock 390 in my 4x4 with a motorcraft 2bl on stock intake. thanks.
Interesting problem. You COULD find a junkyard one and rebuild it. Is the throttle plate assembly removable from the main carb body on the Motorcraft/Autolite 2bbl?
Many of the early carbs from the '50s and earlier just had a close tolerance for the shaft to bore in the carbs. The later carbs had a nylon sleeve on the shaft for a better seal and a less critical tolerance on th shaft/bore area. Look at some junk carbs and get the mentioned sleeve. They are white and go onto the shaft in a spiral manner. I don't know if the sleeves are available, even in a rebuild kit. An older carb shop may have some. Good luck with it.
Airboater 67 - I'm rebuilding a 390 / taking a 4v carb off a 360. The 2bbl carb/manifold that WAS on the 390 may be sent to the scrap yard. It was working and I'd suggest a rebuild on the carb > like new. = cheaper than a new one.
