so yesterday my dads explorer was driving on the freeway and then just shut off. AAA towed it home. then today im working on out last car that stopped running. then i jumped in my 94 limited and it wont start. so i get starting fluid out and it would catch for 1/2 a second. both cars at that time the CEL was NOT coming on. so i replaced my dads crank sensor then it still wont start. then i go back to mine beacuse i was in an apartment court where if i left it overnight it will be towed. so i get some buddies and i said before we push this ima try one more time... WHAT DO YOU KNOW it starts. CEL came on before i cranked it and everything
but before this all happend. in mine and my dads everyonce and a while it would misfire after starting. whats the problem?
Be Careful! My 1993 Explorer with 116,000 miles had a Dash Fire Monday due to me trying to start it w/o a previous indication or not starting. It was totaled due to the age, needed parts and labor vs extensive damage. I never saw a fire but I guess where there is smoke there is a fire!!! Most of all it was too late when I saw smoke. I disconnected the battery and felt for hot fuses but the slow smoke kept coming. I fired a fire extinguisher under the dash until the end. I watched the dash sag, instrument cluster ruin, windshield cracked and later saw a charred ignition cable and switch (“All” damages just above the steering column). I feel it was a direct short related to the Ignition switch. JOW
My Explorer was towed to the dealer this morning. The adjuster said it would be a total yesterday. Called this morning and showed his math, estimated needs and suggested having it examined to see if restoring is reasonable. I hope it’s restored! The source of heat/fire appears to be a fried ignition switch and harness. The additional damage labor and cost will be the determining factors.
So that just leaves yours, or has it not acted up again since that one time?
well mine hasnt acted up again but it hasnt been driven since the last post between starting school and working everyday and getting all of the past 80 degree days. i did get the replacement mirror on. (had a broken one non heated so it didnt even work) got the a/c working. but i have sunday off so ill get as much as i can that day
but before this all happend. in mine and my dads everyonce and a while it would misfire after starting. whats the problem?
I get this on my 1993 every once in a while. Happens while cranking and the motor just starts to fire then backfires through the mass air sensor. It floods uot a little and takes a few seconds of cranking to start. Gremlins but hasn't really bothered me too much.
But then as you found out on the PCM issue, if the dash lights don't come on with the key "on", the PCM isn't getting power for some reason.
so i was doing some stuff on her to day (73 degrees FTW! 95 this past week till today)
and there was a wire on the DIS box that was just twisted togeter. so i soldered that back together. maybe that was it?
