FLAWS TO IRON OUT....

Ok so long story short my 7.3 motor with 400+ sh%# the bed.
So i picked up this engine with 66K on it.
I have it fully installed with all my mods that was on the old motor.
Whick is stage 2's, efuel, PHP chip ect.
The truck really runs strong with only one flaw.
SOMETIMES when i go to start it the CEL light comes on and it wont start. It will crank but just wont turn over. Only happens once in a while.
(Could it be my starter solenoid) because i hear it making that flickering sound when it doesnt start)
So i turn the key back and go to start it has no problem. So when the CEL is on it wont turn over. Also when driving the truck would just shut off.
I changed the CPS and no change.
Any thoughts?
Ty

First thing would be to pull the codes and see if you have any. You also might recheck your wiring, especially to the IPR since all of that work was done. If the pigtail is chaffed, it will cause the very problem you describe.

Go over all the electrical connections to make sure they are all tight.

Not the answer you want to hear, but literally everywhere.

The starter circuit is completely independent of the engine electronics. Sounds like you have two issues. But it's also a little confusing what you describe. First, is it the SOLENOID (ON the starter) the RELAY (on the fender) that's making noise? You say it's cranking but not turning over, but that's the same thing. To put it more simply, is the engine turning when you turn the key to START?

As for the CEL, as said, you'll need to obtain codes. Otherwise you're stabbing in the dark.

As for being "weak" on wiring, get an EVTM, and study any place you choose online about electrical basics. You'll be "strong" before you know it. These trucks seem complicated on first blush, but with some study of the EVTM, the way it all works starts to come clear.

MadP, what's an "EVTM"? I sure could use a good lesson in electrical/electronics. I have a good meter.

Electrical & Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual. Ford service manual with the diagrams, connector face pinouts, diagnostic procedures, etc.

eBay, classifieds on the various truck forums. IIRC a company called Helm sells new ones, but they're $$$$'y. Might be an online version somewhere.

^^^^ That's volume 1 and 2 (i.e. Body/Chassis and Engine/Powertrain). Does not include the EVTM. Still a good price.

Ok...update
I think i have it narrowed down to a area of the engine bay.
So when i turn the key over (like i was marming my GP's)
The check engine light would flicker so fast it appeared to be lit constant.
So when the key is in that position im getting a rapid clicking sound from down around the master cylinder area.
(This would go on for 20 secs then it would stop and then it be free to start.
When i get that sound it wouldnt start.
I had taken a video but i have no idea how to post.

Sounds really similar to what I experience with my truck, unplug the two small wires on the glow plug relay and try to start it, make sure those two small wires are both making contact, if not it won't start.
