I have a friend that has a 7.3l out of a running truck with 65000, but the issue is that it's been sitting for 3 years and has not been started for the same 3 yeas.. My truck has a hole in cylinder #7 and would like some advice if it would be a good idea to use this engine. He got the motor from a dismantler 3 years ago and started a project and put it in a 86 ford f250. Its been bolted in for 3 years almost complete just missing the water pump. All the hole that had no pluming to it was plugged with rags and the hood was on. The problem is he never turned the motor over once a month or at all and we live snow country 4000 feet. Is this a good idea to do or should I just put a new piston in and call it done.
He said it came out of a 98 super duty work truck, but I have heard that ford didn't come out with the DIT until 99, I'm thinking my be they had some late 98 with this motor. My truck is a 2001 7.3l. I know I will have to take some of my stuff off like the intake manifold. The tag on the donor motor valve cover says DIT 7.3l 205 hp @ 3000rpm. The big question is. Is this been sitting for to long. He wants me to either buy a use Vortec motor for is Suburban or $1500 cash, but I think I can get it for $1000 cash.
others smarter than me will chime in....i was going to purchase a 97 7.3 for a spare and was advised that it had to be a 99-03 to work. befor that everything is different, both are 7.3 but completely different, trans will not mount, different computer system, injectors, hpop, different piston degree..all different
If I were you I'd pull the head on your motor first to determine what you might be up against. Then I'd pull a head (or both) on the used 7.3 and take a peek inside of that one too.
But for $1000, you could just buy an overhaul kit and do your whole motor. Then you'd know for sure everything was right. Get a hold of Ed or probably Clay for pricing.

There's really not that much different. The injectors, HPOP, etc. are all bolt on parts you can take from your existing truck. The only thing you really have to do would be to install a block off plate where the mechanical fuel pump came out. The bell housing for the 4R100 should bolt up fine to the 97 block.
hum, interesting, i was lead to believe different, had the chance to buy the complete truck for 700.00 and walked away...
The value of FTE. Always read up here and in the OBS section first. If you go down to the OBS section, several guys are bolting on HPOP's intake plenums, electric fuel pumps, and all sorts of other things from our trucks. They don't bother with our injectors since there are better upgrades available to both of us with proper tuning.
I'm guess the motor is out of an OBS, my e99 (build date 10/98) sticker says 250hp on the VC sticker.
You should be able to use the block, but like others said, by a rebuild kit and put it to your engine. I think you would be money ahead, who knows if the other motor needs rebuilt.
I finally got mine apart and #7 is scorn bad and needs to be bored out. I called around the Sacramento area and the only place that does this is B&R. B&R wants $1000 to bore it out and another $900 to do the heads plus polish the crank is another $100. By the time I'm done I'm looking at $4000 (turbo rebuild $700 and engine kit $1100). So I think the best route is buying my friends motor. I think it will work. Looked at the vavle cover and it is a 7.3l DI 205hp motor, just not a inner cooler type. the only thing I think needs to be done is swap the HPOP and plug the old fuel pump hole and swap all my externals over plus the injectors. I did talk with Clay and he is sending me the combo kit, ccv o-rings and new injector o-rings plus I added new 4inch exhaust. I will have up for sale the older turbo,HPOP, valve cover harness and fuel pump. One thing I'm not sure of is the metal tin for the manfold to the turbo. It looked a little smaller than mine.I will be doing this swap in the next week or so. I'll let you know how it turns out.
