I've never heard of the Diablo Transmission shift valve, but I expect that it's another version of the sonnax valve that I have in my truck. I also installed tricumulator springs at the same time, to complete the shift kit. The install wasn't too bad, especially if you've got some mechanical aptitude.
The Diablo valve is just about the same thing as the sonnex (wich I also have) but I believe it's a tad bigger, resulting in a lil more firm of a shift than the Sonnex.
Dang the sonnax/tricummulator setup will toss your dentures on the first shift ... OK not that bad, but I don't think I would want it any firmer.
Those with the same setup notice the same thing? It softens under heavier acceleration, but the first/second shift seems to be more pronounced than the rest.
You shouldn't be using a Superchips Microtuner in combination with a shift valve mod unless you like a very hard shift. Normally, with a chip we leave out the line mod when we know you're using a valve mod. I recommend either driving without the modification or using a chip that takes the valve mod into consideration.
I only notice a firm 1-2 shift when the tranny isn't fully warmed up. Of course, once the tranny warms up, I start driving a tad more aggressively. I wonder if there's a connection?
My buddy and I just put Sonnax valves/ tricummulator springs in our trucks (99 and 00 350 psds).
both were easy, drain the tranny fluid, drop the pan, pull the valve body off, pop the springs and sonnax valve out, put the tricummulator springs in the bigger springs installed already, put the sonnax valve in, bolt it all back together. took about an hour or so for each truck. Also put a magnafine filter in line while we were at it, (and he put in a tranny cooler, it was kind of neat, he taught his kid a couple of new words for the playground).
The valve kit was $50, the filter $20. The shift before was very mushy. now it is firm and crisp. The diablo chip I run says that it will make your shifts more aggressive based on more aggressive driving, and this is true. In a nut shell, I would say that for the money I spent, this has been one of the best mods I have done.
That's really not true RescueBob...I only repeated words I heard from you!! And you forgot to mention that I was cutting my arms to pieces trying to get that cooler on so it was justified! I agree that my shifts are way better...and I am running a SCMT and haven't noticed anything unusual as far as "hard" shifts...I love it and glad I did it (or, I'm glad RescueBob did it, since he was installing the tranny stuff while I fought the cooler battle!!!
What cooler did you put in? I just picked up a big plate cooler but haven't put it in yet? Any problems picking a location to mount it (assuming you went bigger than stock).
Tru-Cool Stacked Plate..biggest one they had (I think Model # 4950)...I put it dead center in front of the A/C Condensor... I had a hard time getting the return fitting off of the factory cooler (I don't have a cooler in the Radiator) so I ended up just taking the factory cooler out, putting the hose on for the new cooler, and then stuck the factory cooler back in and finsihed up..I put a magnafine tranny filter up front about 5 inches off the return on the Tru Cool...easier to get to to change...overall, it wasn't that bad, but as stated above, it did take a little time...
