91 F350 w/460 crank no start - help!

I use this truck to haul water for the house. It's gonna be 105 today and no water. Noob needs help!

I have a 1991 F350 with the 460, auto trans, dual tanks. Truck ran ok prior to this, no overheating and normal oil pressure but lousy gas mileage like 9 or 10 mpg empty or fully loaded or towing (I assume all F350/460 combos get lousy mileage). Driving down hill about 25 mph, engine coughed then died and would not restart. After towing home, I have verified the following:

*Fuel in tank - gauge showed 1/4 tank, I added about 4 more gallons.
*Fuel pumps run for 2-3 seconds when key is initially turned on.
*40psi fuel pressure at rail, leakdown time well within range.
*Decent spark at plug wire (spark plug end)
*Battery charged overnight
*Code 11 pulled per steps in thread, no other codes.

The engine will crank till the cows come home, very minor "hiccups" like it wants to fire up but it doesn't. I tried shooting a 3 second shot of starting fluid into the throttle body throats and still get the same minor hiccups but no fire or even short burst of running. I only have hand tools and an old analog DVM. Any ideas at all? The kids, GF and animals are all screaming for water . . . thanks guys!

Code 11 is a pass, so the system is good.

How old is the coil? Might be enough power to get spark from the end of the wire to ground, but getting through the plug and jumping the gap might be too much. There is a way to check the coil with an ohm meter...I don't have it in front of me now.

I would start there given what you have so far.

I've had the truck about a year but have no idea how old the coil may be. I do know the previous owner was real good on maintenance and repairs and had replaced the PCM not too long before I bought it. I'll find a way to test the coil and let you know. Thanks for the fast response!

I pulled a plug, grounded it and cranked the engine. Got a good bright spark. Is this good enough to know a spark is getting thru or do I still need to check the coil? The chilton manual doesnt give me the resistance values or specs for the coil - or maybe I just missed it.

Doing a search here is a long thread with a problem that sounds very similar to yours.

Hopefully SubFord will come along and chime in as he knows this stuff inside and out...helped get me on the right diagnostic track a couple times.

And an ignition diagnostic walk through.

Any luck?

I’m having the same exact issue on my 91. Did the same exact thing as O/P truck did... shuddered and died. Used to bog and cough but now it’s a full no start issue. I replaced spark plugs today and took apart the distributor but it seems fine. I know this thread is old but I really need help.
