So I'm still learning more about my truck before seriously jumping into making it mine.
I've read a lot about straight piping, and aftermarket exhaust systems on these old trucks. And I did a search and didn't get the information I was looking for.
The other day I was in traffic and a straight piped cummins drove by, and it was just ****ing obnoxious, to the point where I had to roll up my windows till it was gone.
I really like the low end growl I've seen some of the old idi's do, but not that obnoxious deafening sound when your going 100 km/h down the freeway, and all the research I've done is entirely inconclusive, so I figure I'd throw it to some of the *cough* Older *cough*.... Wait I mean wiser!, members for input, I'd prefer to not spend $500 on an entire exhaust system, and would much rather something I could build/customize/fab myself. I'm also thinking of moving it in front of the rear tire, though I've heard that it makes it louder (Again no real proof to random internet comments).
I appreciate the information.
my '87 is duel 2.25" straight pipe till behind cab then into one 3" turned out in front of passenger side rear tire. it is loud at high rpm's but idles as low as it did with mufflers. i don't run mufflers on anything diesel.
If you don't have a turbo, you don't want to straight pipe it if you don't want outragously loud exhaust. Two of my boys took my 90 to the exhaust shop, and came home with it dual straight pipes on it. A couple of months later one of the boys got pulled over by a state trooper for loud exhaust, and that was during the motorcycle rally at Sturgis. Louder than a straight piped Harley.
Yeah I have a non-turbo, but scouring CL for a used one, or parts truck with one.
I'm not sure how loud they can get, but I know the local limit in the city of Vancouver is 93dba for a diesel engine, so one assumes most of the lower mainland is the same. I don't want to be at the limit, but I want a little more noise from this thing when I rev it.
Poocher, I'm gonna have to jump under my truck tomorrow to take a look at what I have to work with, do you have the cat still in, or is it gone as well?

sounds like your looking for something like this:
******** width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CBGHhFTwClI&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CBGHhFTwClI&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed>*********>
That's actually exactly what I'm looking for. I swear the more I read this board, and see your posts, I get the feeling that we both kinda think the same when it comes to these trucks.
mine will echo off buildings going though town loudest is with rear slider open. and about harley's i got passed by one on 4-lane highway and you could hear it over my truck at 70mph, but at that speed my m/t tires hum so much can't hear truck run.
These IDIs don't have cats. Didn' get them till the first generation of strokes.
Learn something every day.... Last truck I really worked on was a 98 F150, had no idea there wasn't a cat on my truck, although not having emission ratings to pass (5000lb+ is exempt locally) it really doesn't matter.

Well I don't really want noise, the gf will bitch over it if it's too loud (Joke, you think....), just wanted a nice deep roar when I gave her, but not obnoxiously so.

it wasnt really a cat just a glorified particulate filter that will get all plugged up with ****! i know cause that happened with my 95 stroke
My exhaust rotted off at the Y tube flang under the cab. I ran that way for 2 years or so. At speed conversing, with the passenger was just not possible. At idle it is quiet as can be. I took it easy passing houses in the early morning. I passed a lot of LEOs coasting with clutch disengaged. No problems.
I ended up cutting an entire exhaust out of a PS equipped van, cut and pasted it to size as a welding project for class. Fabbed some hangers, hooked it up and ran it. It's nice to be able to drive without ear protection.
