I have some questions guys..I have access to a 1949-50 ford F3 truck. It has a farm box on the back but the truck itself is in great shape. My questions are: Does the F1 and F3 share the same cab and fenders...etc?Do they have the same basic frame ( I will be stripping it for modern upgrades) or is the one ton truck alot heavier and larger? Any help is much appreciated.
I could be wrong and the rea experts will be along soon to correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that the cabs are the same but the fenders and frameare differant from the F-100. The fenders have bigger openings for the bigger wheels and I'm not sure but I thought I read in a post here not to long ago someone said the frames were abit bigger aswell...
To answer your question in short, there's enough differences that finding an F1 would be a better start if the goal is a hot rod. But yes, the cab, inner fenders, grille, and hood is the same, the rest is different, including fenders. Bed and running boards are unique to the F2 and F3 and are not reproduced, and are getting hard to find in good shape.
are the lower front fender extentions the same? I can get a 49 f1 but it has a tooth type grille (mercury?) but I like the ford bar style. I could rob it from the f3 if they are the same.
The lower fender extensions are different due to the larger fenderwell opening continuing into that part. The tooth type is a '51/52 Ford, the bar grille is '48-50. Some of us are looking for the bigger fenderwell types, myself included, so there's always trading material, lol.

Technically the F-3 is a heavy duty 3/4 ton...not a 1 ton truck. If you can get it really cheap. it's not that hard to convert to an F-1. I did that to my truck and it turned out pretty well! Slice 8 inches out of the middle and 12 inches off the end and an F-1 box and running boards will fit right on. The F-3 has a 122 inch wheelbase and the F-1 is 114.

....then we took the F1 upper and lower front fenders off the same F1 donor we bought for the box, running boards, back fenders, wheels ...what?........oooopps, oh, sorry Vern! LOL
I guess it's a matter of how much you want to "play" with your project.
Verns truck is cool - Have fun, that's what's important!

Princess,
I'm just giving him options. He said the truck has a farm box on the back so he's going to need a bed anyway. F-3s with farm boxes aren't cool. The F-3 running boards can be sold easily enough and perhaps the fenders also, so all we're really talking about is four fiberglass fenders. He said he wanted "modern upgrades", so for me that means an updated drive train and suspension. If you're going to all that trouble you may as well have a cool truck. I don't see F-3s as cool...and, isn't playing with your project where all the fun is?
Thanks for the compliment on my truck. I think your truck is cool too even with the manure spreader grille...
