ok so recentlymy truck has been actin funny. it only happens when the truck is on a hill with the front higher than the back. it can be in nuetral drive reverse any gear. but when even backing down my driveway which isnt that steep if i hit the brakes hard it wants to stall. if i hit them hard ennough it will stall. i thought it was mabe the hydro boost but one day i was showing off in the pool hall parking lot and climbed up a hill and when i came down off the curb it stalled. also my friends drive way which is pretty long and really steep it looses power going up it. its not really a bother because i can still tow anything it does all the work fine. it just doesnt seem right. i have 6637 mod striaght back exhaust and a super chip flash paq. does the same thing whether chip is in or out. had up to the code reader and my school. (i go to school learning about diesel) no one can figure it out. and no codes. any ideas? cam position sensor? checked the throttle position sensor cause sometimes the throttle feels funny but thats fine. cant figure this one out. sorry bout the long discription. oh and its an early 99 f-250 7.3. thanks for any ideas
How long has this been going on? When it cuts out, does it die like someone turned the key off, or does it sputter a little first? How hard is it to get it restarted (still facing uphill) after the stall? Is your oil level full?
Sounds like your torque converter is locking up when the truck is in the uphill position. That would cause it to stall when you put on the brakes, like putting on the brakes without pushing in the clutch on a stick. This one may take some research to determine what is causing the problem. Some guys have used a switch to keep the TC locked for better mileage and have put a light on it to know when it is locked. You could hook up a light to determine if the TC is actually locking up when the truck stalls. Your statement that the truck looses power going up a long steep hill would indicate that the TC is locked and not working properly to allow the engine to build power. Just some ideas.
yea ive thought about the torque converter ill have to do the switch and light thats a good idea.
and its been goin on fora couple months now. when it shuts off it just dies rpms dropto a point where it cant run. so its more like just a key turning off. unless it doesnt turn off the rpms will drop quiet low like 300 or soo. but it starts right back up.
I know you referenced this but does it do it frequently when you are in neutral or park and step on the brake? That would make it more of an electrical problem but good luck trying to find it. This will take a lot of trial and error. Do you have access to an AE scanner to see if some codes are coming up? With it you also can monitor real time results to see what is affected when you step on the brakes.
Make sure fluid is good as mentioned, but I am thinking electrical glitch. I hate those. That part about the dieing when hitting the brakes leads me there.
Edit: if the fluid does not fix the issue, try bypassing your fuel pump shutoff temporarily to see if that unit is not going south. I am referring to the reset button thingy/crash assembly if you are not following me.
