Transmission questions.

302 v8, AODE

Have been noticing either some slipping or freewheeling.

If I give it alot of gas lets say taking off from a light, it will Bark the tires good in 1st, but sometimes it will seem like it slips from 1-2 but after 2 it will run solid again.

Also it does something similar on the freeway, I will be cruising along, then I hit a hill or something and the truck will want to gear down, and it seems like once it does it will start the slipping again then kind of "punch" back into gear if you know what I mean.

Also when hitting these large hills in the city (theres REALLY steep grade roads going up a large escarpment hill deal) It will just really act funny like the trans doesn't know what the hell to do sometimes. Its hard to pinpoint if its slipping again because gear changes are alot quicker etc.

Could this be a problem with the MLP sensor? Could it need readjusting?

Or am I looking at something more major. The thing that throws me off (I dont knowmuch about trans problems) is that under hard throttle, it will go into 1st and handle it fine, then sometimes slip in other gears, then back to handling the later gears again fine and so on.

Which tranny you have? Ford had three automatics that would be in your truck: AOD, E4OD, and the C6. The E4OD will have an Overdrive On/Off on the shift handle. I'd say your tranny is probably going. That's what my E4OD is doing right now. That is why it is getting dropped off today to get rebuilt. First is good, but after that it is all slop. And Hills? Forget about going up those the way my tranny is.

well I assumed I had an AODE (4r70w)

Yes I do have the manual OFF button on the shifter, my Trans code on the door jam is U I think.

I wonder how long I have, I can drive it normal all over town and not see the problem, I say I only encounter the problem mabey 5% of highway drives.

mabey I have a couple months? mabey less?

I know this is gonna be a somewhat tough question to answer, but my stepfather is a mechanic no longer in the buisness. He has every shop tool at his disposal including a lift. Lets say 2nd gear is going. What are the involved basics for repairing this trans? What type of timeframe could you see this taking? And as well cost?

Would it be easier to buy a yard tranny and just swap it and hope for best of luck? What do these tranny's typically go for in a yard? If its the 4r70w, they put those things in all the crow vics, would a vic tranny the same model fit on this truck? (5.0Lv8 94)

Sorry for all the questions just trying to get my bearings on the situation before I make my next move.

Go to this link: https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...ers_Guide.html

It tells where you can find what tranny and some general information on them. According to this, you are probably right on what transmission you have in that truck. Take a look at the link, though. I think you will find it very helpful.

If the truck were mine, I would take it out and have it rebuilt. You never know what can be wrong with junkyard parts.
