Hey all, I've got a 1997 F-250 XLT, 4.6L that was a project truck but due to some financial problems has become my primary vehicle. Suddenly the little problems are more important.
After starting the truck, the engine runs as if it's misfiring a cylinder. If I let it idle for about a minute the problem goes away. The number 4 cylinder was recently not firing due to a faulty spark plug wire, but I've fixed this problem.
Any experience with this? I suspect compression issues. It's not throwing codes, so I don't know if this is a big deal or not.
i believe my 5.4 has a small pin hole in the head gasket on #1 cylinder. A year ago it did as you said. Every morning it would miss for 1 minute, then o.k. I noted a cup full of antifreeze missing in about 2 weeks. My theory is the small hole did not allow much compression into the antifreeze, but when the truck set overnight it would leak a spoon full of water into the combusion chamber. Every morning i had the missfire for a minute. I did get a code every now and then.... ended up putting a bottle of BARS head gasket and block sealer into the antifreeze and that fixed it... been about a year.
I tested compression and found it to be below the other cylinders. The other cylinders have around 120 psi compression while number 4 sits at 85 psi. I'll still give the leak stopper a try and let you know how it goes. Thanks!
