trans trouble/have codes

a buddy of mine has a 2001 f250 7.3 4wd auto, with trans shifting troubles.seems to be hanging up some times he hooked up to his sct live wire and pulled these codes.
1. p0732 gear 2 incorrect ratio
2.p0733 gear 3 incorrect ratio
3.p0781 1-2 shift error
4.p0782 2-3 shift error
5.p0783 3-4 shift error
i tried a search but it did'nt work too good for me. anyone have a list of what these codes are? does it sound like a bad VSS?thanks in advance.

Here is the list of what they are:

1.p0732 gear 2 incorrect ratio
2.p0733 gear 3 incorrect ratio
3.p0781 1-2 shift error
4.p0782 2-3 shift error
5.p0783 3-4 shift error

But I don't understand why you asked, you posted the list!

These codes mean second, third, and fourth gears are not working correctly. Does the trans shift at all? Is the fluid burnt, or brown, or black? A bad VSS usually won't set these codes.

mark, thanks for the reply.i guess my question is whats the fix? it acted like this a couple of weeks ago and then returned to normal. then it acted up on wensday night. it doesnt seem to want to shift. i'm not sure about the fluid yet. i'm going to look at it today for him. obviously i was hoping for a easy fix. thanks again mark, i was hoping you would chime in.

It might be an easy fix, it might not. The codes are only the first step to diagnose what's wrong. The shop manual (not Chiltons or Haynes) has step by step diagnosis.

do you have a shop manual? if so can you point me in the right direction? what should we be checking? thanks. also...fluid looks pretty good. full and still on the red side. he drove the truck this morning and it felt o.k. seems like when it happens, its will only act up when the trans fluid gets warm.

I do not have a shop manual, sorry.
You can get one at Service Manuals, Owner Manuals, Wiring Diagrams, Service Bulletins - Helm Incorporated and I often see them on Ebay.
