Think I finally found the culprit to the noise's my wife is hearing while driving.
There is a lot of slop in the steering, and I mean to a point you can tell something is loose.
When you guys have to replace it do you use new or used? Is there a typical part in there that usually goes and can replaced alone?
Whats the difficulty level. I have tools, air, a way to lift it up,etc. But I'm not sure if I should attempt this myself or not.
Well ... I've got the steering box out now. Can someone please tell me if it looks like the play in that steering shaft is too much?
And how does in detach on the firewall side?
Mine moves almost that much too. I might get my hands on the new part and see how much play is in a new one before buying it and going through the hassle of replacement.
I though that might be my noise as well but it turned out to be the idler arm. See my post in your other thread.
Thank you for your reply. I compared it to my F350's steering shaft. That one has hardly any play. I ordered the part and will have it in the AM. took me about 2 hours to get the steering box and shaft out so should take about the same putting it back in.
So you know the steering shaft that napa and advance auto sells is not the same. Not even close. Those are about 17 inches long, whereas the one thats on there is close to 30 inches. Looks like its gonna have to be a salvage part.
