Interesting product for adding extension from 2nd usb port.

CA-U1EX USB cable and brackets kit key features

Add this handy USB wiring kit to any car radio with a USB port. The USB panels allow for a neat and convenient way to connect your USB devices to your radio, while the male-to-female USB extension cables make connecting up USB devices easy.
Now you can add a USB port right in the dashboard, under the dashboard, or in the center console.
Can be used with any device that has a Standard or Mini type USB port.
Kit Includes:
  • 100cm USB Type A male to Type A female cable
  • 100cm USB Type A male to Mini-USB male cable
  • Under dash bracket & spacing block
  • Flush mount bracket
  • Mounting screws & cable ties
  • Compatible with all USB compatible radios

Don't mean to bring up an old thread, but where do you get this kit from?

OR a Mini Male to Mini Male to go into a WD Hard Drive. I have heard that guys use Hard drives up to 320gb with success.
Your image has been moved or deleted... you wouldn't still happen to have it, would you? I have an 11 SD, and popped the glovebox, but didn't see anything close to looking like a USB box.

If you go to the main article and look at the Sync module, and then follow the instrctions you should be able to find it.

Here is another link

Careful with the cable you buy for the USB2 port guys, note the opposing angles in the ports on the USB photo on the link. I ordered the cable from Parts Guy Ed, but it was the replacement cable for the main USB port, so it did no fit within the slot for USB2. I haven't had a chance to call him and get the part number for the correct cable yet.

Now if someone could tell me how to get the uppermost trim piece off of the center console, I would be in business. I want to route the USB2 cable to the interior of the console and install a port in there. That way I can keep the Ipod plugged in and locked away at all times. I don't like the cable running through the cab and into the console through the wire slot in it.

Any advice on that would be appreciated.

As soon as I have located the correct ford part number for the cable, I will repost on this thread.

Hubs don't work

I tried hooking in a 1:4 port USB hub hoping I could attach more than one flash. Don't know if the '11's support it, but my '10 Sync coughs up a message saying hubs are not supported.

Anyways, I keep my Ipod hooked up to USB2 and stored hidden inside the glovebox. My microUSB stick sits in the port on the dash. Works great.

I saw that angle thing, bwindell... hoping the cable I bought is going to fit in without me needing to shave the housing down any. I ultimately want to do the same as you, with mounting a port in the console, but for now, I am going to be more than happy storing mine away in the glovebox... It, too, can be locked, and gets much less use than the console.

I ordered both of these from Amazon, $5.89 shipped.

Amazon.com: USB 2.0 Type A to Mini USB 5-Pin Type B Female / Male Adapter: Electronics

Amazon.com: USB A Female / A Female Adaptor / Coupler: Electronics

If you drop down your glove box (push sidewall in on right side) and look right alongside the right side opening you will see part of the USB box. It has a raised diamond pattern on the side facing the left.

There is a USB wire on the bottom of two ports, plugged in and going forward.

If you look up above the glove box hole you will see a piece of steel plate with a whole in the middle. This is big enough to stick an iPod up into (properly "protected) and hides it well.

That's the easy part. Getting my iPods to always show up on the radio is a different issue

You will also need a USB A male/male cable if you're going with that setup. That adapter you ordered is a crossover adapter... it is wired in reverse on the one side... not sure the purpose of it, but it isn't going to work for your application. This is the one I bought:

Amazon.com: USB Gender Changer, A Female To Female: Electronics

However, doesn't look like they're in too much of a hurry to ship from CableMart, so I may try to find it elsewhere.

The one I ordered works. Using a standard USB (PC end) to a mini USB (like a phone charger) and an iPod USB cable.

Mine works and completely controls the iPod, just not all the time.

Thanks for reviving this old thread! I've always wanted to be able to lock up my iPod up without having to disconnect it.

I too wish the interface worked a little better. Having to remind Sync from time to time that the iPod is connected is bothersome. I may go the memory stick route to see if that works any better.

My memory stick has never failed to be recognized, and it's a much cheaper device to leave in the car (and therefore risk being stolen). I don't recommend using a standard hard drive, though. The long-term vibration will most likely affect the drive in a negative way. Stick with flash memory and you'll be fine.

I tried the 2 TB hard drive in the truck this morning. It fired up through plugging it into the USB port and the AC outlet, but after three minutes, Sync still didn't recognize the drive... Guess it was taking forever to index (or whatever it does to initialize it).

Had it done it in a reasonable amount of time, I definitely would have gotten some sort of shock-resistant case for it.

It probably can't recognize a drive that big. Did you notice any activity on the drive that would indicate an indexing process? It's possible that it was just taking a long time, like you said. I'd tend to lean the other way, though. Also, a shock-resistant case won't do much if anything to dampen the vibration. It'll protect the drive from big shocks like dropping it 4 feet onto concrete, but unless it has some sort of suspension built into the case (there are *very* few cases that do, and they are expensive), it won't have any effect while the drive is in the glovebox.

This is a public service message from a systems engineer. Not intended to hurt feelings or disparage ideas. Just hoping to help someone avoid the ultimate disappointment and expense of drive failure

Ha. No offense taken. I have five drives, all mirrored. It has taken years to meticulously rip my collection, so I can't be too careful. But, was willing to sacrifice one of the drives... Would be beyond orgasmic to be able to take my entire collection with me...
