Hey guys this is my first post on the forum been looking around for a while but finally needed to ask a question.
my 1991 f250 will idle fine in park put as soon as i put it in gear it dies because the idle speed isnt high enough. if i give it a little gas with my foot on the brakes it will stay alive but otherwise it dies. i've already replaced the MAP sensor and the fuel filter and the problem is still happening. It has a EFI 302.
Any suggestions? or has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to fix it?
Clean or replace your IAC valve on the throttle body. I don't have pictures but you should be able to find plenty of info on it here. Good luck, Chris.
Is the engine in good shape? My truck has close to 180k on it and the PO sucked at maintenance and it does about the same thing. I cleaned my IAC and it didn't help much. I manually raised the idle, started using Lucas Oil Stabilizer, and recently SeaFoamed it and it helped alot. Mine only did if after it heated up though.
Ford Fuel Injection How To Run a Self-Test Here is a link on how to get the trouble codes without a code reader. However you can buy a code reader for under $30.00 which makes life easier.
Check that, when working on the IAC valve, you did not disturb any vacuum pipes or electrical plugs.
The high idle seemed to be because the PO had tried to adjust the idle rather than cleaning the IAC. It is down as low as i could get it at this point.
There is a procedure to reset the idle in our trucks (i can't remember the details, it's kinda complicated, please do a search), do that and the high idle problem will be gone. Don't fool with the screw on the TB.
