Question Lincoln 368 pics? need help....

There's a old Lincoln motor sitting in the shop where I work at, I'm trying to identify what exactly it is. I have been doing some looking around on the internet and I think it's a 368. It has Lincoln valve covers, 4bbl intake, and written on the flywheel is " '56 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser." My co-worker that used to own the shop said the motor is from a Merc that was being restored, the motor has been rebuilt, it's also painted Ford blue. The new shop owner (the shop is a Toyota/Lexus shop) was going to have it hauled away for scrap since it's just sitting around , but I talked him out of it , now he's interested in selling it. I don't have a digital camera, so I can't take pics.

Anyone have pics or links to pics that I can compare it to?
Anyone know what this motor could possibly sell for?

Thanks,

Taz

edit: The motor is missing the carb , distributor, alt. bracket, and maybe a couple other small doo dads. It has a water pump, and crank pulley on it though.

Lincoln 368 pics? need help....

Thats the last of the Lincoln Y Blocks, 1952-7 and 317/341/368.

Howsumever there was no 56 Merc Turnpike Cruiser, it was available in the 57 Merc only. Standard in the 57 Turnpike Cruiser and optional in the other models. Standard in all 56-7 Lincolns.

Not much of a market unless someone needs it of course. Ive been looking for one for a truck project but you are too far away.

The engine had great potential but the aftermarket never spent much time developing it.

Lincoln 368 pics? need help....

I found a 52 lincoln at a local boneyard(317?) also,...is this series a "YBlock" as in like the 239/256/272/292/312? I don't think so, but could like the parts there for my TBird buddies, if this stuff crosses over.

The 383 is like the Edsel 410 and the 430/462 Lincoln of the 60's and DEFINITELY different from a Yblock. I just did a top end rebuld on a 64 430. Heads remind me of a Chevy 409 with flat face with valves flush(like a diesel) and combustion chambers in the pistons. The block is a gentler angle deck(30 deg. I think) with std 45deg tilt cylinders. 368 series I do not know at all I guess. I will look at that 317 closer next time at my friend's boneyard. Incidently, I'm told, the 368 with a McCulloch or Paxton 500hp was power in the first Batmobile(George Barris' rework of ford's 1955 Futura prototype leftover.)

The 317/341/368 were the Lincoln Y Block which came out before the Ford. Also a one year wonder with the 368 in the 57 Merc. About the only thing that swaps is the distributor.

The Ford Big Truck Y's of 279/302/332 cubes are Lincoln derived but low reving small valve torque engines. Those were replaced by the FE derived FT series.

Ive been looking for a 368 but no luck around these parts. Ford Y's are under every tree.

BTW, the MEL series was the 361/383/410/430/462; just more underdeveloped (by the aftermarket) and underappreciated engines from Dearborn.

Looks like the 52 at Absolute. I saw it again...definitely not a Yblock or 430 relative. I don't know the minute details of design though.

Thumbs up lincoln 368

Hi,
I was searching for a lincoln 368 engine and found this thread. Do you know if that engine is still around, and if it is available? I am interested in it if it is. I bought a 57 lincoln parts car for the engine, and the block was cracked. I rebuilt the heads, but I still need a good short block, and some other parts.

Thanks,
Shane

the 52 Lincpln at Absolute Salvage, Middlesex,NJ is at (732)469-2202 or email me direct at e.hixenbaugh@worldnet.att.net(my wife's computer) and I'll hook you up on the particulars.....be forewarned that this 52 Lincoln has been sitting for a REAL long time there. I guess it is a 317. Definitely not related to the 383-410edsel-430-462 series. The 361 was a 352FE ,050 over (just like the 360/361FT truck engine of 67-78), but used in Edsels. I do not know why such minor internal machine work differences were wasted on 8 cubic inches just to be different from the 352. BTW-- There are actually speed parts around for the 430 type lincoln motors, and they were pretty hot in heavy cars at 400 factory hp(58Bird)3-deuces, cams headers and valves. 750lbs made it no good for light cars, but big cars and Chris-Craft yachts ran like heck with them, every bit as good as any modern big motor setup---just that weight was a problem, but the 429-460 is close on weight too at 720 dressed out to run, a/c and all. I will have info on that (317?) if you wish. Let me know....bt

Being that it's all the way in NJ, and i'm on the opposite corner here in san Diego, I think i'll hold out for a 368. Thanks for the info though. I would like to build a lincoln powered studebaker pickup, but that's a long way off. A 317 would work just fine in that (especially with that crager bell housing). I have a pair of 57 lincoln 368 heads that I rebuilt a few years ago, but I still need a short block. They are painted and ready to bolt on to a motor!

**Also, someone mensioned that they needed valve covers. I think I have an extra pair or two. I will check this week. Let me know if you still need 'em. You can email me at sbagnall@***.net.

I know of Baker's, a supply garage for this....any others?? I know this pump date back into the 50's usage on at least the 430 engine series or earlier(??) thanx, bruce thompson

You might try Dennis Carpenter in Charolotte, NC. I think he has an on-line catalog.
