Electrical Issues? Help!

Here are the problems on my 1995 Ranger XLT 3.0l Auto:

ABS light flashing 16 times
Speedometer sometimes works
Brake switch doesn't work
Turn signals don't work and then they do
Radio lost power at one time as all station presets are gone

Any suggestions?

First, have you checked all your fuses?

The ABS brain looks for 12 volts from the brake switch. So does the shift lock solenoid. If you can shift out of park the brake switch is working.

Low voltage can cause all kinds of crazy problems.

Make sure the connections at the battery are clean and tight and connect your voltmeter to the battery. Engine off you should read 12.6 volts. Engine running should read around 14 volts.

just a few thoughts. do you have rabs?...........when you ground the abs diagnostic port to test the code for normal system operation is 16!.... I wonder if you have some grounding issue somewhere that is messing you up. it might not hurt to spray the brake switch with an electrical cleaner also....

I do have rabs. I am afraid that it might be a grounding issue witch is hard to find. I crawled under the truck last night looking for loose wires but found none.

I checked the voltage and got 12.49V. I then started the truck and everything seamed to work. The voltage when running was 14.43V. It might be a suspect battery. We have been over 100F for about two weeks in Tulsa, OK. It is hard on batteries.

Still having problems. I cleaned the battery posts. The radio is dead. I checked the voltage to the radio and it reads from 11.06 -11.60V. To sum up:

ABS light blinking
No radio
no speedometer
no turn signals
no brake switch(can't shift to drive)

I am going to start looking at the wiring diagrams to see if I can figure this out.

Help!

Seams all the components that are having problems have a common ground, G103. How do I go about troubleshooting the ground?

Saw same issue on another forum

Check a ground wire on your driver's side inner fender (fender well) where the wire corrodes & breaks off the terminal. Should be about midway along the well. Depend a LOT on which Ranger you have, but odds are, once you get in there, whatever you have, it'll stand out like a sore thumb.

Everything on your truck is wired from fuse to radio etc & then to ground. Since voltage at the radio is way low you need to back track & find the low voltage.

I have the factory wiring diagrams for all my Fords.

The closest i have to yours is for my 95 Taurus.

The taurus is wired from a 40 amp maxi fuse under the hood. The 40 amp powers the interior fuses for the radio/turn signals/brake switch.

Is your voltage also low at these interior fuses?

If your wiring diagrams are worth the paper they are printed on (not many are) tracing the voltage back to it's source will be simple

I started to poke around under the hood. I found the ground location and it looks good. I moved some wires looking for a cut or break and couldn't find any. It was 98F yesterday so I quit after about 1/2 hour. Anyway, I started the truck and everything worked ok. I drove to work this morning and after about 30 miles and some bumps the speedometer started jumping. I am not finished yet. I have a after market alarm system that was installed 10 years ago. I noticed that sometimes it goes off with the truck just sitting there. I will look at that system in more detail as there are loose wires near where the short is.

ABS pump is on when you press brake pedal, but ABS unit is ign. circuit powered.

Well, start with brake pedal switch and wiring. But this is not all

VSS reads erraticly, so check its wiring, but this is '95 truck. VSS is shared with Instrumnent cluster, PCM and ABS, so if you have auto (i suggest 5R55E ore A4LD with OD and TC clutch solenoids) you have some shifting issues.

but seems to me fuse box wiring may be damaged, chek wiring under the dash and fuse box wiring under the hood, all connectors for corroded terminals.

Ok, I began messing with the fuse box and fuses under the hood and the hood light starting blinking. So I moved the fuse box until the hood light stayed on and everything worked. I moved it again until the hood light stayed off and had problems. I do I remove the fuse box and fix the problem?
