BAD valve/lifter clattering

91' Explorer w/160,000 miles...engine sounds like there is not enough octane in the gas. I run 92 octane and a bottle of octane booster in each tank full. The problem comes and goes but is getting worse. I'm beginning to think its not the gas but a problem with the fuel management system. No acceleration and a bunch of clattering....anyone have a clue???

Have you pulled the codes? There may be a code present even if the CEL is out. The gen I 4.0s are notorious for having a loud lifter or valve, but that shouldn't affect performance. If it is a lifter/valve, it usually should quite down after it warms up, but again it shouldn't affect performance.

I dont think its just one valve or lifter, Its not a tick tick tick as just one bad one would do. Its a clattering noise as all of them are doing it at the same time...I dont know how to pull the codes on a ford.
