New to the site & have not had time to read up. Soooo, I owen a 99 f350 v10 5 speed, w/130k (bought it w/113k 4yrs ago). I'm running 33 tires & just put in 430 gears, also have K&N filter but not the intake, airaid spacer for mpg (yea right), areo turbine muffler w/stock pipe & 5" tip. I also have a dinosourses chip I took out because it was grounding out on cpu (what ever you call it) & who ever owned the truck before me was towing a fith wheele. I'm towing about 5k through the colo mountains & can't maintaine speed in 3rd gear (up hill); 2nd gear red lines at 35mph. I want to be doing 50mph. I'm getting passed by loaded 18 wheelers not to mention deisle trucks. Can you loose that much hp w/my milage? Am I asking to much for a v10? Do I need a new motor? Do I need a deisle? I don't want a deisle because I like my truck & only drive my truck when I have too (camping, bad weather, side jobs etc...); otherwise it sits. I need to do the front suspension & drive line (carrier berring); but don't want to spend another dime unless this truck will get the job done. O WISE ONES HELP ME OUT. I WANT TO BELEIVE!
I would try a 5-Star custom tune by Mike. Go for the 93 tow tune, it helps the power and transmission shifts. Cost is low compared to most of the other alternatives. If that's not enough...maybe upgrade to PI heads, that bumps the hp up to 310 from your current 275. More money but will provide another step up. It difficult to suggest a diesel when you only put an average of 4k miles per year. Now, if money is no issue...King Ranch 6.7 should keep up everyone.
Thanks for the input. Don't want to get into the engine unless its a last resort. Do those performance programers work at all? I want to drive this truck into the ground and then get a new motor with all the trimmings. Still got to do the little things first (breaks, suspension, etc..) Time & money, but still cheaper than a new truck.
Yes, the 5-Star tune is an improvement...as I said in power and transmission shifts (you have a stick, nevermind on the tranny). But don't expect diesel like improvements of 100 hp or something. It was money well spent for the price. If you don't want to get into the motor and already upgraded your gear ratio the only other cheap improvement would be downsize your tire size. It will give you the same effect as changing gears. Or, you could add a supercharger. The supercharger would solve the loss of HP in higher elevations.
Man, I really like my tires. Changing my tires cost as much as another gear change (which I'm leaning towrds). But a supercharger sounds fun. Can my 130k motor take that? Can the spark plugs take that? Already helia coiled one. & what about a turbo? Like I said; I haven't had time to read up on this stuff.
At 9000 feet your truck loses 74.25 HP. That makes it a 200 HP truck. Now add the weight of the truck and 33" tires and it's going to be a pig empty. I pulled a jeep on a trailer over the same passes with my 2002 and it was only doing 35 mph at that altitude. The turbo diesels automatically compensate for the altitude with additional boost and do not loose any power. That is why those guys fly past you. Thanks for the info. I've been eyeballing a 7.3 w/93k on it for some time now. I can't afford brand new and buying used is always a gamble. I'm not a hard core gas man but I don't know any thing about diesle. exept when they break its expensive.
No more slow tow. Bought an 06 6.0l w/94k. Amazing difference. Sorry dad: but I did get the extra warrenty for when it breaks. I'll try to learn more about the diesel motor in the next 3yrs. Thanks for the advice O WISE ONE'S.
Well...a turbo diesel was another option, that should help the situation, congratulation! Spend some time in the 6.0 threads to learn about upgrades and fixes. EGR cooler and Oil cooler are probably top of the list. Check it out LOTS of info. What did you do with the V10?
