Hey guys, I'm wondering when you should replaced the coil? I've done a tune up to the truck, replaced the plugs, cap and wires. I did that awhile ago, but don't most people put a new coil on to? If so, what brand should I go with? Or does it not matter?
I really like the MSD TFI coil. I have one on my truck. Alot of guys on this site run one. I don't know for sure, but I don't think an older coil needs to be replaced as a maintenance part though.
Just a note. MSD changed their coil a while back. I think it might have been 08. It's a bit sleaker now, but I don't know if the internals have changed.
Old Coils look like this:
New Coils look like this:
I've heard that MSD cap quality has gone down in recent years, but I don't know about the coils. I have MSD cap/rotor/coil on my truck and it runs fine. I get a little buzz on the radio after the change though, but I've thought it might be due to the strain I added to the system by gapping the plugs to .055"
Actually they still sell both. The old one was called the Blaster and the new one is still called the Blaster. The old design is still made and is called Street Fire.
I have always run those same things on my truck and never had radio noise. You might need to replace the RFI filter.
I have a question. How to you post pictures of random things from other sites with out having to host them on here or on photobucket etc?

I guess I thought that the blaster & street fire used to be the same. Then the blaster got revised. maybe I'm wrong.
I've been attributing the noise to the ignition changes since it started right after my ignition system changes. My thought was that since a higher voltage is now being used because of the gap increase, that a greater magnetic field was being produced. My other thought was that it was somewhere in the distributor.
as per the photos. Just go to the site where the pic is. Look at the image properties, and copy the image location to the clipboard. From there, you just past it in like you would a photobucket image.
Thanks for the image tip, but I think thats what I have tried before and it just puts the link to the picture in the post.
I have a Blaster in the older style case. I like the old case better. It looks like the stock coil and has a metal base. The newer one just looks like its cheaply made, but its probably not bad. My friend has one on his truck and it works fine too.
I have no idea why they still sell both. The used to just sell the Blaster in the older style. They are different prices and have slightly different specs. The secondary resistance is a little less on one, but everything else is the same.
I'll tell you something I don't like that MSD did. They changed the upper spark plug wire retainer on the cap and rotor kit. It used to hold all the wires down. Now it hold all the wires but the coil wire and the coil wire has a stupid clip for it. I still use my old retainer from 10 years ago.
interesting to note, the street fire is showing 48kv as apposed to the blaster's 44kv. but the peak current and spark duration are the same. I kinda wonder if all the info is correct. I was checking summit and MSD's websites.
MSD says the 8227:
Coil Specs
Turns Ratio: 100:1
Primary resistance: .68 OHMs
Secondary resistance: 4.8K OHMs
Inductance: 5.6 mH
Maximum voltage: 44,000 Volts
Peak current: 220 mA
Spark duration: 300 uS
Weight: n/a
Summit says the 8227:
Primary Resistance 0.440 ohms
Maximum Voltage 44,000 V
Turns Ratio 85:1
Secondary Resistance 3.1K ohms
Inductance 7.0 mH
Peak Current 300 mA
Spark Duration 250 uS
aslo, on another part of MSD's page, it has the turns ratio at 1:85. So I don't know what to beleive.
when posting the photo, I use the photo post tool so it puts the img tags around the link instead of the url links
Well the truck feels like it has lost power, so I'm trying to figure it out. I've given it a tune up with in the last year, the air filter is good and the fuel filter was changed 6 months ago.
Thanks. I got it to work. Man, I should have known that by now. Oh well.
Glad to help.

something that might be worth a try is hunting for vac leaks. On a few occasions I've broken the vac lines and had a truck or two turn into a dog until I fixed it.
