Fuel filter question

I discovered that the fuel filter return valve in my secondary filter housing was broken. Could this cause a hard start problem. My 04 6.0 motor has had a hard start problem for quite some time. I have been plugging it in and it has been starting fairly well. Thanks in advance.

I assume you are talking about the fuel pressure regulator? What specifically was broken?

I am talking about the "stem" that the fuel filter is placed on. It broke off at the top. It has an o-ring piece that was broken off.

What you are talking about is the fuel filter shutoff valve. The "stem" is spring loaded so when the filter is removed, the valve shuts and no fuel goes to the injectors. This is the reason it is so VERY IMPORTANT that when the filter is installed that it is attached to the top first then inserted on the stem and screwed down until tight. The resistance you feel when screwing down the top is the filter opening the spring loaded stem valve. If you don't attach the filter to the top first, then you risk crushing the filter, the valve will not open and the motor will not start.

The stem is easily replaced with the appropriate torx tip.
