I have a 2001 F150 4WD XL. It has a 4.2 V6 with over 250K that needs to be replaced. I have had trouble finding a 4.2 to put in while I rebuild the existing engine. Apparently they are rare according to the salvage folks. I have been told I can use a 3.8 instead and have found a very good one w/58K. Is this true and if so what issues such as computer, engine mount, etc. will be involved. Any help would be greatly appreciated. LWT
Respectfully, I have a problem with your logic on doing all this extra work and possible hassle.
Why not buy a rebuilt 4.2 short block, transfer parts and have it done with instead of all the hassle of a temporary motor install at double the work.
You can't rebuild cheaper than buying a short block by the time you add in all the expensess to job completion.
Gaskets, plugs, head freshening, antifreeze, belt, oil etc.
Been there many times. I dosen't work out to be less expensive in the end.
Good luck in any event.
All you need to do is swap everything from your old 4.2 block to the 3.8. Heads, intake, oil pump and timing cover, oil pan, ect. It all just swaps right over. And engine mounts line right up. I did a lot of research and apparently, many shops do this exact thing. It will run fine with the stock computer. You will have just slightly less power, but it will work fine.
i also have a 4.2 that needs replaced and cant find another one to install i was wondering the same thing about the 3.8 conversion i only use this truck for hauling lumber but will it still have good towing power because i am looking to buy a boat and will need the truck to pull it to the lake i would greatly appreciate any help or ideas thanks
