My truck is the 4.2, and we all know the 4.2 is the same thing as the 3.8 mustang V6 (97&up). If I were to order headers for my truck from a 3.8 mustang, I know the would match up to my engine. The question is, would they match up to my exhaust? After I hooked them up, would they bolt right up to my exhaust pipe from the collector? Or would they not fit at all?
MAC sells a header for the 3.8, if you get them get the short tube not the long tube. Short tube fits in our trucks better you will still have to get a muffler shop to make some short extentions to reach your stock pipe.
Why all the fuss about these headers you seek. Have we done our research as to whether running larger diameter headers on a basically stock engine will even benefit you. You may actually lose torque because of the lack of proper back pressure. Same happens when you put aftermarket exhaust and pipes without modifying the motor.
I'm sure the headers would help me when running nitrous though. At least NX suggests that after market headers and exhaust increases the performance of the nitrous system.
However, on a stock motor, you might be wasting your money.
Also, if you compare the 4.2 headers to the competition, you will definetely notice that the 4.2's headers are nice and rounded and appear to provide better flow over stock header on chevy or dodge. I think your wasting your money. You need to get more fuel and air sucking into your motor before you need to worry about how fast it escapes.
But, you are a persistent dude, so.... some guy gave me this number 661-823-2400, and said the this company, if forget the name, make "equal length" headers for the 4.2 for $300.00. Equal lengths are, I believe, better than shorty's. Give them a call and see what they say and let us know.
I need some stickier rubber to help me at the track. Check out my picture gallery for time slips from last nights runs at the track. My 60 foot times SUCK because my rear was spinning all over the place. I need stickier rubber AND i need more practice with all this newly found torque. Nice puffs of white smoke though, but it killed my times. Best I could get was a 17.070 at 4600 lbs. But I know I could get into the 16's with some more launching practice.
Man, so far you've just about taken 2 full seconds off your time! You need to get some new wheels my friend...or don't rev it as much while on the brake.
Let me ask you this...do you just keep it in drive, or do you actually shift throught the automatic shift points yourself? <-(hope not)
I've tried all different things. The truck is fastest when I just leave it in drive, line lock it at the light, and release the brake when the 3rd yellow light comes on. This gives me a great reaction time.
Your absolutely right about the tires. That S rated LT stuff just doesn't do it anymore.
I just ordered, from the TireRack, 4 Kumho Ecsta V rated tires. The reviews on the tire are excellent. Lots of Lightning guys run these tires and say they stick like crazy glue. I should have them mounted by this weekend and will run them next wednesday.
OH, and that's over 3 full seconds off my truck. I can show you my very first time slip when the truck was stock. I can't remember exactly but it was in the 20's (that's pretty freakin sad). But little by little it's getting faster and faster. I think the tires will give me the other .2 seconds I lost from slippage.
Woh! Over 20?! Well, you've definately come down from there...quite substantially I might add. For the "tank" your truck is, it sure is quick to get into the 16's! That's what I like about that kind of truck. It was never meant to go fast, but it's more fun to make something go fast that was never meant to, than to just buy something already fast in itself. Keep up the good work on the truck!
The tires are going to help alot. I can't go any faster with the tires I have on there now. I should get them in on thursday and have them mounted. I'll take some more photo's of the truck and post them with the new tires. Friday night I'll take it to the track and see if I can get those .2 seconds back. That will bring me down into the 16.8's (fingers crossed).
I need to lay off the cash expenditures on the truckage for a bit though. I've just been blowing too much money. For now, I can play with the nitrous to see how much more a 50 shot and a 75 shot will get me.
It's inevitable though, the torque converter is going to have to be replaced. hmmm 1,000.00 bucks. ugh. But, I will either have to replace it willingly, or it's going to get freakin burned up on the bigger shots of nitrous anyway. I won't have much of a choice there.
...argh, I'm ithin' to run my truck! All they have left is to finish building the parking lot for the track. The have already tested it, and it's now up to speed as far as accurate quarter times go. I can't wait! I just hope it's done before X-Mas, so I can get a good before/after look.
