I have a 74 f100 302 with a edelbrock 650 carb and intake. It will start up fine but if i try to give it gas, it will die. It will run if i barely touch the throttle, but if i go any further is when it dies. I took the air cleaner off and sprayed some carb cleaner in it and ran it for a few minutes and no change. It sounds like it is sucking more air than fuel. I tried adjusting my idle screws to no avail. I dont know a whole lot about carbs and i was wondering if it was a problem with the carb, fuel pump or filter. The plug wires were changed along with the distributor cap and rotor button. Plugs were not changed(parts guy gave me the wrong thread size) points have not been changed yet, but are in need of it. Is there anything else i can check to help?
id say fuel pump is first place to trouble shoot....and its not imposible to get a new pump that doesnt work these days. 2nd check and or replace all your fuel filters and turn it over with the preshure side of the pump disconected from the carb and see if your getting a nice solid stream of fuel.
Sounds like a vacuum leak or faulty accelerator pump.
Were I would look also. My carb was in serious need of an accelerator pump. Would fire up and idle nice, but give it ANY gas, and it spit sputtered and stumbled on it face till you let off of the gas. However, a vacuum leak can produce similar symptoms, and could be a real easy fix too.
ok, checked the fuel pump. it would shoot a big squirt of fuel out at start up, then nothing. So i changed the fuel pump, changed and adjusted the points, and changed the spark plugs. Now she wont fire over at all. it will start up with carb cleaner. It is getting sufficcient fuel to the carb at the lines. Is the accelerator pump on top of the carb beside the barrell?
ok. after a little while the truck has started up and runs good at idle, but again with touching the gas just a little bit it starts to die out for a second, then it revs up, but its not running 100%. Its real sluggish and doesnt have a lot of power. Have decided that a carb. rebuild would be the best thing, finding trash in the fuel when i removed the fuel line to check fuel pressure.
yeah, i thought i mentioned before i was going to rebuild the carb., but i have a wondering mind sometimes.. so i might not have, but im in the middle the carb rebuild- had to stop for a little bit now, it started to rain. but the accelerator pump operated fine and i saw no signs of a problem with it, spring was good, rubber gasket or seal in it was in good shape, but there was a tremendous amount of trash in the carb. So right now im thinkin im gonna end up flushing the gas tank out. I do have a good cleaner, i cant think of the name of it off hand, but it works in about 30 min. It didnt get all the dirt burned on the surface of, but its not my carb, i was told dont worry about it. but it did clean it up pretty good, it got all of the gunk out from inside, made it look like brand new. But thanks for the help guys, it might have also had a little vacuum leak cause the bolts to the manifold werent tight at all, but my carb cleaner test didnt show anything with that, but that dont mean it didnt have a vacuum leak there.
its all done now. i spent more time fiddlin with the accelerator linkage gettin them to work right than i did rebuilding the damn thing. runs like a champ now

Nice. Great to hear that it all worked out for you. I've yet to finish mine, but it's coming along nicely.
I'm not in too much of a hurry, but yet I am haha.
