yes it will. just make sure you leave the bolt in the middle so you dont collapse the first couple threads with the center rod. if you do, then you will have to tap the crank again
I meant take it all off, So I leave the bolt in?? or loosen it ? My goal today is get the front cover off and have a look Forgive me for being ignorant, this is my first time !
you pull then engine yet or still doin it inside the engine bay? If you pulled it... You might as well throw a new oil pump and pan gasket. Preventive maitnance is key. I wish I would have done mine but I didn't plan on keeping this engine in for long.
OK, Got it,thats what I thought, just wanted to be sure. Its still in the truck for now,I have the clip out ,got it all ready to pull, still saving funds for engine stand, chain hoist, parts, beer, bandaids,,you know, things like that.....Yes its getting new everything when I get to that point.
Got it off, the last time the truck ran,I had that awful chirping noise I kept talking about, coming from the front of the engine.I can turn the engine with a ratchet and get that noise from the camshaft gear.should it have any play in the camshaft at all? I can move it forwards and backwards and side to side. Bearings bad? and how does the cam come out?
I've never had the cam out of a diesel, but if it's the same as a gasser, you pull all of the lifters and pushrods, check behind the gear for a retainer (and remove it if there is one) and it should slide out.
If you're not replacing the bearings, be VERY careful you don't scratch them with a cam lobe. They are very soft.
I don't know how to replace the bearings. I've never done it...
As far as play, moving fore and aft is ok (to an extent) but it shouldn't move noticably up/down/sideways at all...
you press bearings in and out $50 is the average cost to have a machine shop do it. Agree about numbering them. Even they are roller lifters, there's still matched wear for each. No need to store them in oil but you should soak them for 24 hours before installing. Better to be safe then sorry. And there's 2 or 3 bolts behind the cam gear that retains it in place. Just rotate it for the opening to expose them
