I have a 1997 F150 4x4 4.6L auto with a heater problem. I was hoping some could help troubleshoot to minimize labor and part replacement. In the heat selection, defrost, panel, or floor, I get heat for about the first 20-30 minutes after startup. Then the heat stops coming out regardless of where I have it selected. There is still heat coming from the core, and the fan is still blowing and it will change speeds, and I can feel heat in the ducts, it just won't come out any of them. From what I have read, it sounds like the blower door motor, maybe. If I shut the truck and let it sit for awhile it resets and works for another 20-30 minutes and then I lose heat again. Has anyone else seen this where it starts out working, then acts like it is being diverted? When being used in the A/C mode it does not happen anywhere near the consistently as when it the heat mode. Any insight would be appreciated.
Yes it could be the blowers problem since your heater is working properly. But also look after the heater since it is directly connected with engine the is no big issue .
Agree with Johnny Langton, Temperature Blend Air Door. It's motor driven and possible the door has broken. If you can locate the motor and turn the temp control from cold to hot or vise-versa, when you experience the problem, you might be able to feel or see the motor drive turning. If it's working the door may be broken. Maybe when it gets' hot a split in the door spreads slightly allowing the motors shaft to slip.
Thanks for all your help. The problem ended up being the actuator box... it was missing! Went to Advance auto parts and bought a new one and installed it.
