Towing and overheating
I go out onto the interstate and with the OD OFF with speeds around 55 - 65 she will heat and move over the the overheat portion of the gauge, I slow her down to 55 and will get out of the overheat range but still run hot.
It has a new Motorcraft thermostat and new fan clutch along with a new large transmission cooler in line.
Now the last time I was out of town I did not turn off my OD and she pulled just fine and never heated up out of the "normal" range. We were turning about 22-2300 RPM.
I'm going to assume that the increase in heat is from the heat in the transmission fluid heating up the coolant, but wouldnt the extra load in OD cause the same issues as the truck out of OD and turning an extra 1000 RPM?
Keep in mind this isn't strictly about RPM only. It takes a lot more fuel to get that weight up above 55 MPH.
I don't think the transmission cooler is causing the problem unless you specifically noticed this start after you installed it.
I pull highway speeds with my '01 V10, and personally, never lock out the OD myself. I think that was a bit of a failsafe in the early days for dealers to get out of some of the warranty issues with the early OD trannies in trucks. (Same idea as the really low towing ratings in manual tranny trucks, as dealers were getting bit too often with burnt out clutches due to improper driving.)
