driveshaft?

Does my 03 7.3L 2wd have the slip joint that needs to be greased and what type of tool does it take to remove the bolts on the rear flange of the driveshaft?

No, the slip joint is in the transmission. The rear bolts are either 10mm 11mm or 12mm 12 point. I just did the U-joints on my 03 eddie 2wd and I forget what size the bolts were.

Sorry, the 12 point is just a normal 12 point socket or box end wrench. I used a socket, swivel, and an impact.

Guess I misread other post, I thought the driveshaft had a slip joint in front of the rear u-joints. I looked at the rear flange bolts and they looked like the head of the bolts are similar to a torx socket?! How hard are they to remove, never been off and EX has 140k miles!

I had to use a wrench on the front part and a socket or impact wrench on the rear.

They look similar but they are just regular 12pt. A 12mm 12pt socket is all you need. It is found in most socket sets.

My 2wd had a slip joint. Never heard of one in a transmission.

You'll need to cut the straps off the boot. I didn't reuse mine. I just used zip ties.

Does your truck clunk upon take off?

I've never seen a slip joint inside a transmission. How would that work? Every slip joint I've looked at, and it is well into the thousands, has been in the driveshaft. They all need to be lubed at one time or another,

My driveshaft does not have this rubber boot, so I guess my problem will be in the u joints and drive shaft has a flange that mounts with 4 bolts to the differintial.

My driveshaft had the boot but the problem was on the cv nuckle just before it bolted to the transfer case. I guess there was some kind of ball between them so I rebuilt the hole thing.

My EX is 2WD so I guess this is reason that I do not have the same setup, ie the rubber boot!

He is probably referring to a female splined yoke that slides into the tailhousing of a tranny which is very common.

Yes. I have found it normally easier to just say it is a slip in trans slip joint and the others a in drive shaft slip joint.

We just called it the yoke that goes in the tranny. They are all slip jonts any way you look at it.

So, what you are saying is that the splined shaft going into the trans tail housing has to be greased! It dosesn't get any lubrication from the trans, no rear seal in the trans!
