Hi, so I just joined this forum with hopes that I can gain a little insight as to why my 2004 F-150 is giving me some problems. One of the problems that recently began is that the front axle makes like a moaning sound when ever I turn left or right, it's real loud moan, almost sounds like some type of metal on metal. The other issue I have is that my fuel gauge doesn't read full whenever I fill up the tank, it only goes to about 3/4ths full when in reality it should say full. If anyone has any ideas as to why or how I can fix these problems, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Welcome
Well let’s take the simple issue first and that would be you fuel gauge. This would most likely be the float in your tank.
Now the as to your front end noise on a turn. I would assume that you have a 4x4. If so there is a really good thread (long one) regarding everything you ever wanted to know about the IWE system. Great troubleshooting procedures. Do a search and you will find it. Have fun and post your findings and questions. I am sure someone will assist you. We love to comment on things.
A few other things to check into are the UV joints this is a similar sound I got on an older ford of mine when the joints went bad and needed to be replaced.
Also are you having any steering issues when you turn such as it tightening up and making it harder to turn? Here again I got a similar noise on an older ford when the power steering pump went out.
Anyway Welcome and ask away this place is awesome for answer on problems.

These trucks don't have a float in the gas tank. That system worked well for only 80 or more years so they had to change it. Now they have a fuel level sensor. It's attached to the fuel pump. You have to drop the tank and remove the pump to get at the sensor.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, could it still be a duck? A rose by another name is still a rose.
Oh yea, I almost forgot. My wife is now a domestic engineer.
I had the same problem with the rear end in my 04, and i thought it was the front making the sound but it was the rear. the fluid broke down and it wasnt alowing the clutch packs to slip freely because there is a friction modifier addative that needs to be added. I replaced the fluid and did a bunch of figure 8's to work the fluid in the packs and it hasn't made a sound yet.

Just found your response today. You make a good point, if it's bad, what difference does it make. I was only trying to point out, that there is no longer a float that can start leaking. Also, they were easier to replace back in the day.
Oldguy4, there is nothing back in the day that wasn't easier and cheaper to replace than on these newer trucks. It seems to me that Ford has forgotten Henry's philosophy of keeping things simple and reliable.
That's true, however it could be worse. I've worked on Honda's (had one in college), Toyota's and Lexus (or is that Lexi?) and they cram so much stuff into a small space that doing anything is near impossible without pulling the engine. The one thing I like about my Expy and F-150 is there's enough room under the hood to work
I agree, Bridge. But GM is as bad or worse to work on unless it's a 4 banger. It would be neat if we could get the Aussie Falcon in the States. RWD and V-8 power with Ford reliability.
