Changing Horn Question

Looking to change out our horn in the X and am looking for something a bit louder than the stock. I'm after a Semi Tractor Truck Big Rig horn. Could someone or anyone here point me to the right direction of a kit of such a horn that I could install in the X, where to buy, price, etc etc?

There are lots of places that sell the train horns and any parts house has the truck type horns as well as most truck stops. You might also check out the JC Whitney site.

Are train horns legal? In a vehicle that is. :-)

I know someone would say that they are legal on trains. :-)

I dunno about other states, but here in Kalifornia, air horns period (much less train horns) are only allowed on commercial vehicles like a tractor-trailer rig (semi) or emergency vehicles.

Many Thanks for the info folks. I dled a sound clip of the train horn that Riffraffdiesel.com sells from the Klienn air-horns site and it sounds okaay...but not as nice as a tractor truck horn would sound. I'm wanting it to be the same amount of loudness of the tractor truck horns.

As for the legal thing...well personally down here in HI I've never heard of such airhorns in any vehicles around us as of yet but I'd sure think it'd be quite awesome and would surely move em out the way. lol. Only thing that concerns me is when come safety inspection time. It would sure surprise the inspector.

Just put a switch in to go from stock to air. I had an air horn on mine and it never caused any issues come inspection time. Granted it wasn't a big horn but...

I don't know what the previous owner did, but I can't even find any wires for a horn. No horn in the stock location and no wires in that area either. I can hear the Relay when I bush the button but that's it. I'd like a train horn but I was hoping I wouldn't have to rewire the truck for a horn.

I kept my stock horn but added a triple train horn on a button that I put next to the steering wheel on the dash. That way you can have a "polite" horn and a "GET THE HECK OUT OF MY WAY" horn.

Hadley Air Horns Installed!!!! Pics Too!!
<HR style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #d1d1e1; COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1 itxtvisited="1"><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->Had to go with all caps in the title... man are these horns LOUD!!!!
(HADLEY H02009A)

Go to my gallery to see more pics...

It took some time and effort, but with the help of "franklin2" in the Electric FTE forum I was able to hook the horns to the oem steering wheel switch and with the use of 2 relays and a 6 way rotary (use only 3 poles) switch I and have:

A) Air horns only
B) OEM horns only
C) BOTH!!

THESE AIR HORNS ARE THE REAL DEAL... AWESOME BABY!!!!!!

Here's the thread link:
Hadley Air Horns Installed!!!! Pics Too!! - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

Read the entire thread for some great info!!!

Here's how I wired it up:

And here's that thread:
Air horn wire-up

And finally here's a link to the replacement compresser unit I installed due to the original one failing after one winter of northeast salt... this unit has had ZERO issues in 2 years.

One more thing... I wired the compressor directly to the battery via a relay that is attached to a lighted switch on my dash (pics are in my gallery) That way I can turn of the compressor if needed.

ViAir 380C Air Compressor Pump Kit (380 Pewter): Constant Duty 200 PSI 12 Volt

Hope this helps!

Got mine from JC Whitney & its pretty loud

Finding a place to install the long trumpet will be an issue. My mechanic installed mine in the front wheel well, you can see it peeking out of front of wheelwell behind tire. I installed the horn button on top of the dash above the screen

Awesome guys, many many Thanks for the info.

Question, 71-4R3SONS, can you tell me what tune the horn plays? or would happen to have a sound clip you could post up so I could hear it? if it's LOUD and is the same tune as a Big Rig horn I'm all for it. Also what did everything cost in the end?

Here's a link to Hadley's site explaining the Horn set I have... It sounds just like a "big rig" horn. My boys call it the "goal" horn... similiar to the horn sounding in an arena when the home hockey team scores a goal.

Hadley Kit HO2009A

I don't exactly remember what it all cost... look through my thead... I believe I answered that question... I'm short on time now or I'd look back myself.

Have Fun!!!

Yes, Im not sure what state you are from but you definately want to check state laws on that sort of thing....I know in some states just the installation of air horns is considered a violation it is considered a warning device same as a siren. They dont mess around either when it comes to emergency vehicle impersonations even if that wasnt the intention.
