a 50 bed and fender question

Hello all,

Will the 51-52 bed and back fenders fit on the 50 f-1? Are they the same? I see a lot of 48-52 advertisment for parts, just wondering.

Thanks,
Tubby

The 48-50 had the same bed but I understand that some late 50s had the 51-52 styled bed. The 51-52 fenders will not fit the 48-50 bed due to the raised sides but the whole 51-52 bed including the fenders is a bolt-on. I used a 51-52 bed and fenders on my 48...

Vern nailed it.

In short, yes the 51/52 bed will bolt on.

Somewhere inlate 1950 Ford changed the style of the bed. The earlier beds, 48-50 had raised bedside panels, rounded stake pockets and a rolled rear sill. The later beds got squared off with flat bed sides, square stake pockets, and a square rear sill. Early fenders will bolt to a later bed but they will have an approx. 3/8" gap around the top of the fender to the bedside.

There is also a filler that they sell for fitting the fenders, to take up the spacing.

Who sells this? I've never seen them.

Although this guy doesen't have pics on his Web Site, I have talked with him in person and he told me that he had them.

He explained to me thad due to the cost of the Mould they were only turning out the smooth mounted Rear Fenders, and that there was a I believe Rubber Gasket that would take up the spacing for the Embossed earlier Beds 48-50.

I have used his products and they are top notch. You should see the demo he puts on at swap meets. He will take a running board and set it on a cement block one on each end, then get up and jump up and down on it.

When I first saw that exibit I was sold on his products. I would have bet he was going to land on his butt, not so it held up.

Perhaps by now he is making both style Fenders. I have tried to find a pic but no luck.

I know there have been folks here who have used the 48-50 fenders on a late style bed without any hassles. The gap isn't too noticable.

I would bet that you could use the front fender welting and it would cover up the gap. Heck, the front fender to cab gap is pretty hefty.

Yes you could probably use that, as you say its large enough.

I think the one this guy had was more of some thing that could be compressed and look almost even, but then again either way you would probably notice that little bit at the back.

The bed and fenders will interchange as a unit between 48-50 and 51-2. But mixing and matching beds and fenders will result in a fitment compromise where the fenders mount to the bedsides. If you have a 51-2 bed and fender set, it will fit onto your 50 chassis without issue. That is exactly what Ford did late in the 1950 model year as a running change when the switch occured.

Also, as a side note, F1 fenders are unique on both the 48-50 panelled bed sides and the 51/52 flat bed sides as they will not interchange with F2+ fenders off the 8' "Express Boxes" of those years (respectively). The F1 fenders off the F1 6 1/2 foot "Pick-up Boxes" are 2 1/2 inches wider.

Too bad you're a few thousand miles away. I have a really nice and complete 51/52 F1 bed for sale.

That's the one bad thing about this great country, it always seems like what you want is always on the other side of the country.

That's an interesting and potentially useful piece of info. That could allow a wider tire/wheel combo on the F2, etc, couldn't it?

Yes, but the fenders will stick out on the sides a little more than normal.

Deja Vu, had someone ask me the same question about putting wider tires on just the other day!
