I have a 79 SB 2wd that has a annoying steering column rattle that I have posted before. I have had the column apart three different times and can't find anything wrong. Yes I have already changed the bearings. What I'm looking for is a breakdown diagram of the column without tilt nor P/S because I'm thinking maybe something is missing. And the reason being is in the LMC catalog on page 102 it shows a spring right under the steering wheel which I do not have. And I'm not for sure how accurate there diagram is. Another thing I've had the shift tube out and thought I read somewhere there should be a crush washer at the bottom which I'm missing as well but not for sure on that one....
The diagram doesn't reflect that. Either does the replacement part at LMC, or Dennis Carpenter, or Virginia Classics. Have you replaced this unit before?
Right. So that means no bearing in the lower column? I know thats the part number for the bushing, in fact two dealers in WI have this discontinued part in stock. But if I need a bearing I will buy that, or will this new bushing take up the slop in the bottom of the column?
The bushing has the bearing in it. It is all formed as one unit. I bought my last one from a guy on ebay. It was a metal outer housing with a bearing that is way better than the plastic bushing. I haven't seen him on in a while with one though.
