Bugle sounding as I lay my E4OD in the grave. It has 147K, well maintained, but second gear started towing my 9K RV home from the ocean. The local tranny shop gave me three options. Stock rebuild $2500, Stock rebuild with upgraded Torque converter $2800, or the heavy duty towing option with everything under the sun $3500. The shop will drop $400 if I drop the tranny and bring it in. I rather not drop the tranny myself. Do these prices sound out of line? I'm in Washington state and prices here are generally 20% higher than the rest of the country. I can afford the $3500 option but it still really sucks.
Sounds about right. But for probably only a few hundred more, you could get a BTS or JW tranny shipped to you. They are known to work and will exceed this shop's rebuild by far.
I'm just gonna convert to a ZF5, hopefully before my E4OD goes to crap. I don't have $4-5k to spend on a BTS.
Plus, I already have my parts truck with the ZF5 and 4x4. Plus I like the manual trans better, and I can sell my E4OD after. I have a factory Reman with less than 20k on it.
I'd like to do a BTS, but someone has to install it once it gets here, and tweek any after installation issues as well. I also need the truck working an on the road this week. I think I'm going to have my local shop do it. Once installed, I can always go back to them for problems. It's alot of money but from the parts he listed, it should be a very good transmission for towing my RV. I'm not racing, just need a tranny to handle heavy towing. I went to a second shop for a second opionion and they quoted the same prices. At least the overall figure is consistant where I live.
I heard it was $5k. I said in another post once I rebuilt mine twice for the price of a BTW or JW or RacerX.
Thats exactly why i suggested it. Why do it multiple times when it takes only one time to get it done right? Im not picking apart what you said Glenn, just trying to make a point. Local shops throw out words that make the tranny sound good, but if your going to spend anywhere near as close to a JW or BTS tranny at a local shop, i wouldn't. If the price is comparable, go with what is known to work specifically for our trucks. Local shops are great when it comes to turbo 350 trannys and 700r4's, give them a big powerstroke E4OD and good luck.
