Cold Weather Starts

It gets cold up here in Alaska and my 99 F350 PSD is going to have to live outside some times and start every time.

Consider 40 below the limit.

I expect to need an engine oil pan heater, auto trans oil pan heater, and block heaters.

What else is going to need protection. The poor beast will have to set for two weeks unattended while I am on work shift.

i can keep it plugged in the whole time.

I would change all of the fluids to synthetic for sure. Make sure your batteries are up to par as well as your GP system. Is there any way that you can use a timer and have it come on every so many hours for X amout of time? That way it is not plugged in for 2 weeks straight but does get some warmth to it as well.

My nephew had his brake lines freeze a couple of winters ago in Colorado. I suppose there was water in the line?

At any rate, he installed new lines and now places cardboard in the wheel wells to keep the wind from blowing over the lines. Seems to work well and keeps heat from the block heater contained under the hood as well. Might work for you as well.

Good luck up there this winter. I visited Alaska a couple of months ago. Spent a week up there. Fantastic place to visit.

Cold Weather

The tip about using synthetics is right on. I have done that in all my vehicles in this weather.

I see some guys throw a blanket over their hood while it is out in the cold. I have always wondered if that helped.

During the time that I am home (off shift) I can keep the beast in a heated garage.

As for the timer idea. I think there are some availble that are temperature operated. When it gets cold the timer turns on the electricity.

I will check it out.

Up where I work we simply don't turn our trucks off all winter.
