After my stock 6 disk changer died I pulled the trigger and bought the cheapo wal mart DVD player for my 2002. The unit was $148 plus $10 for the wiring harness. For the money the thing works great. It definitely sounds better and can go louder than the factory. My only gripe is I can't figure out how to get the clock on the main screen. I haven't hooked up the backup camera I bought but that is next on the list.
In order to get the 7" screen to fit I carefully cut the plastic bar on the dash that separated the radio and HVAC controls. I used my die grinder to carefully trim the plastic back so the trim ring would fit just right. If I get bored I may whip up a custom wooden trim ring to match the rest of the fake wood on the Lariat.
Man that looks nice! I've been tempted to splurge for a DVD player for my 2010. One of the reasons I came back to Ford was for the double din stereo port.
This is a 2002, so it's not actually a double din. I'm not really sure what radio size classification is, but the opening is exactly 4" in height. Hence the necessary surgery on the dash to get the unit to fit. Totally worth it though.
As far as the price goes, i'm not sure why but it just seems like there aren't any name brand units under $500. So I figured why not try out the Wal Mart deal. I mean even if it lasts 6 months I'm only out 150 bucks.
Now if I could just get the backup camera wired up. Any suggestions on how to get the wires into the cab and up to the head unit?

I bought a 25 ft 'video' cable with 3 leads, and rca connectors on each end, then separated the leads..
I drilled a hole under the passenger side door sill. then used some plastic split conduit and some rtv to grommet the hole.
passed the wire up thru there, thru the driver door sill, and into the kick panel and up under the dash..
I also ran power back down thru the same hole, connected to one of my upfitter switches.. this gives me manual control of power to the camera. (I also ran the tailgate power lock wires thru this hole).
the camera is also powered by the backup light in the left taillight housing. a diode between the camera and the upfitter connected power keeps the backup lights from coming on when the upfitter is thrown.
I still have to install the head unit, but it will be a simple rca plugin when I do.
I did something similar to sdetweil... I found a day/night camera for $16, 30' of RCA/Power cable and used a Pioneer AVH-3200DVD Double Din head unit to replace the factory radio. I drilled a hole just below the spare tire hole near the license plate for the camera and ran the cable up the driver's side frame rail using plenty of cable ties. Under the dash, directly ahead of the driver's left knee is a diamond shaped rubber plug that I've used previously for my CB antenna. I ran the camera cable in there and up and over to the radio. This radio automatically comes on in reverse to show the backup cam but you can also turn it on through the touch screen anytime.
Check out ebay..... I shop around on there all the time and you can find a great price on double din Alpine DVD players (which in my opinion is top of the line).
Just searching around and came across this. If you guys are looking for inexpensive DVD/TV units check out Auto Car Electronics Wholesale TV's are EXCELLENT quality. I own one and love it. You can pick one up for $200 shipped.
