It depends on the tongue or pin weight (not the weight of the trailer itself) and the suspension under your truck.

Basic rule of thumb is you want to level out the truck with the air bags. Put enough air in them to eliminate the squat. You may want to play with that in 5 pound increments to see what it does for handling and ride.

When not towing, keep at least 5 pounds in the bags.

When I had my 96 with bags if I had 3psi in them empty it rode like a rigid suspesion. I don't understand why they say a minimum of 5psi that is ridiculious. They will not get pinched or wear out in deflated form. They are made of the same material and design as the ones on my semi, just smaller. Run them deflated and use the stock suspension when empty. As far as loaded yes level the truck to distribute the wieght properly.

Your concern is that you have enough air in them when empy and unloaded so you don't pinch the air bags. My Firestone's say min of 5psi.

I run about 30 psi when I tow my 5er.

I don't know how others are set up but mine there was NO WAY they could get pinched nor have an of the others I've seen. They set between the frame n the leafsprings. Just my experience.

The 5 PSI when empty is the manufacturer's instructions, not just the random opinions of delirious truck owners.
